Q: iMac screen turns off after 3-5 minutes of being on. Why?

Hi,

So for the past 3 months, our iMac has been having a weird screen issue. I don't know if it has to do with overheating or whatever, but basically what happens is I'll turn on my iMac and it'll start up pretty quickly. I'll start opening documents or video files and then after 3-5 minutes, the screen will go black. The keyboard will still be on, and after a few minutes, if I press the startup button again, it'll be as if it just went to sleep. But the only thing that helps this is actually blowing a fan on the back of the computer itself, and that'll ward off the screen shut off anywhere from 20-60+ minutes. Sometimes it shuts off and the back of the computer will be super hot, and other times its a perfectly normal temp - not even warm.

This has gotten really annoying and I'm wondering if theres a solution for this before I bring my computer into the apple store? It's also kind of tedious to always have a fan blowing at my computer so if anyone could give me a solution, that would be awesome

BTW - iMac is from 2011 I believe. Biggest model available at that time. (I think thats the 27 in??)

thank you!
