Q: Create apple id for a child - credit card required

I installed iOS 8. I turned on Family Sharing, and tried to create an AppleID for my son (who is 5).

No matter what I do, the setup fails, asking me for a credit card (see attached image for screenshot). I have a valid card associated with the account (on first try, the setup asked me for the security code, which I supplied). I have added this card back in on iOS and on my Mac using iTunes. It never accepts that I have a card added to the account. Which means I can't add an AppleID for my son. What gives?

I guess you're right... only.. the world is bigger than the US and COPA isn't applicable in my country. Something apple should have thought of.

Regardless... this is 2014 (as someone wrote) .. and many are opting out of CCs to use debit cards instead. Our family have cancelled our CCs and the same goes for most of my friends. I just bought an IPAD for my kids birthday and now we can't set up an apple-id for him. Wow.. not what you expected from Apple.

Well well.. even the sun has it's spots. Just didn't think Apple had any.

I'm sure I'm only the hundred billionth person annoyed by this... I am an adult who REFUSES to use or own a credit card. I have NEVER had an issue using debit cards until now... but it's a good thing I fully researched the child settings with Apple for my minions (6 & 7) before buying 2 iPod touches for them. Looks like Kindle is a better solution for kids... this is just ridiculous!

I agree with you. My guess is Apple starts with the "lowest hanging fruit" which is navigating US legal requirements and then moves toward expanding functionality for other locales. Wouldn't be surprised if in the future another way is found to validate adults.

I have the same problem, i even tried changing with 3 valid different credit cards and it always said invalid security code.

It works in iTunes  and they just don't let it work for creating chid apple id.

    Apple please fix this

    Hi,

I've been trying to create apple ID for my 10 yrs old daughter and didn't suceed. It only got to the stage where I have to put CVV credir card no. When I did it, it said invalid CVV card not. The card I used is the restore as my CC for iTunes payment. The. I changed it with my other CC and it was the same thin. It went the same when I wanted to create family sharing. The message was the same...invalid CVV card no. I've tried many times but still couldn't able to get through. Worse thing is my bank called me and said they have recorded multiple transaction on iTunes for attempting this. i have contacted apple for this support but up till now they still could not figure out.

It's discriminating against those of us that choose to live debt-free. I'm very disappointed that the only way to verify being an adult is by providing a credit card!

No, sitting here Christmas morning trying to set up my daughters new ipad and used several cards, found out about the debit thing, then changed from my normal cc to a different cc and still denying me with the invalid ccv... So devo'd to be sitting here blowing my Christmas morning trying to be an i.t instructor over this. Crap job Apple... Glad i just switch to the Pro 3 myself and loving it while ditching Apple for my own use. i figure it's a good "toy" but this is disappointing.

    Hi there,

Just thought i would share a method that i use for adding a child account without the need for a credit / debit card

    1. Create an email address for your child (Outlook, gmail etc)

    2. Purchase a physical iTunes gift card (petrol garages, shops etc sell them)...do NOT use an email gift card version as it will not work!

    3. Go to iTunes and click to create a new account

    4. Enter your childs details, but make sure the date of birth ensures they appear as over 18 (yes its naughty, but you have little choice but to tell fibs!)

    5. At the stage where you are asked to enter credit card details, leave that section blank and instead type out the code found on the back of the gift card in the area just below it where it says something like "redeem a gift card"

    6. Fill in any remaining details, press continue...voila! your child now has an Apple id which does not require any credit or debit cards

    Cheers

    Scott

This link shows how to setup an Apple ID without a CC but it won't be a child account. It is similar to igetcha69's method noted above. Create an iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store account without a credit card or other payment methods. http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204034

Still having the same issues and nows its the 1 feb 2015.  I had to set up an individual account for my daughter when she was 8 using my bday as this was the only way around the issue with permission to ask to buy.  Now Santa brought son (9 an iPad) and I thought yeayyyyy! a child account and family sharing way to go!!!!! but NO ..... still no way to do this as keeps asking for the credit card to be added even though it recognises there is one on the system........ COME ON APPLE you want the world to buy your products and thats what we are doing but your not helping with these issues it is left to outsiders to offer help! I have not seen one answer from Apple support with suggestions or fixes or recognition to this fault.  It is false advertising when you say your offer this family sharing and it has problems ...... Very Disappointed........ From the UK!!!!!  Now have to do go the same way as daughters account!   GREAT!!!!!!!!! NOT !!!!!!!!!!

It's not up to Apple. The use of a credit card to verify your identity and electronically agree to allow access to online services by a child under 13 is legally required.

You can change the payment method after activating family sharing.

Creating accounts for them as you have is against the law.

Your quite right KiltedTim and thank you for commenting.

ITS not upto Apple to verify but it is upto Apple to supply what they say, as with Family Sharing, great idea .... I would love to set up both my children under my account with their own under 13 account but as with the other commentators and many others who are currently in the same position, it goes as far entering apple ID (adult), then child details and then hey ho the Problem "there is already a CC associated with this account please Verify with the CVS (which I do time and time again) and it will not allow me to continue KiltedTim.

So if you can suggest a way where I can just set up a childs account like it says I can under my own apple account using my CC that would be super however I have spent hours trying to do it and researching hence coming to this site too; to no avail.  SO Illegal it may be but it is the only way I can and many others can get the kids on board the Apple (expensive product) experience and with 9 Apple Products  in tow I feel I have the right to be a little peaved as nothing seems simple anymore.  I Wanted a Child Account For Both Kids With Apple Sharing couldn't wait for it ...... BUT I AM STILL AT A LOSSSSSS!

Any Help would be greatly appreciated,  perhaps you or anyone else who has achieved the child account through the simple route as Apple set up implies through family sharing I look forward to receiving with abated breath.
