Q: iMac Keeps restarting & failing to boot

Hey guys,

Got a 27" 2010 iMac here and having been having nothing but trouble here for the last week or so. First of all it started restarting without a reason, saying the mac had to restart because of a problem. I tried removing any hardware I had in it (external hard drive etc) but it kept happening. I then restarted my computer on Monday as it was going slow and then it failed to get passed the boot screen, would get about one third across the progress bar and just sit there then after about 10 minutes would closed down. Tried opening disk utility and then was unable to verify, repair or wipe the disk so I thought the HDD was fried. I then went out purchased a new HDD and got it installed. Reinstalled everything which took about 10 years, then last night computer updated and restarted... now once again it is not booting back up. Unable to repair disk or verify disk so have wiped it again and currently installing Yosemite once again (with 38 hours remaining considering I live in ADSL land still) my question is has anyone experienced this and does anybody have an idea what is happening as it is driving me up the wall -.-

Need any info just holla

Please navigate to EtreCheck.com and download and run their report, then post the complete report in your reply. We can look for any obvious issues then.

I see some relatively minor issues,

    1. The RAM you installed should have the 2GB RAM in Bank 0 & 1 and the 4GB RAM in Banks 3 & 4. I have attached a photo below show how they should be installed in matched pairs:

    Screen Shot 2015-01-21 at 10.04.29 AM.jpg

    2. You also have a large amount of Launch Daemons, you likely do not need all of these.

    3. Also check to see if you Parallels software is up-to-date and is OK for OS X Yosemite.

After you have fixed these issues, test and post back with results.

What is Launch Daemons and how do I remove some of them? (or do I just remove them all?)

Look in the report and you will see all the launch daemons you have. Then look in System Preferences - Users & Groups - highlight your user account - click the Login Items tab and then highlight the daemons you do not want and click the - symbol below. Then restart in Safe Mode (hold down the Shift Key when you hear the startup tone until the machine boots.) and then restart normally.

They are parts of various system modifications that run in the background. The only safe way to remove them is with the vendor provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Otherwise, it could make your machine unbootable. But as, you have discovered, they could do that anyway.

I suggest erasing the new hard drive and reinstalling the OS again. This time, when you migrate your files, only migrate user documents, not software. Then, verify that the 3rd party software you really need is compatible with Yosemite and only reinstall what you need.

    1. Back up your Mac prior to making any changes to your system. To learn how to to that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
    2. Update OS X. To learn how to do that read Update OS X and App Store apps on your Mac - Apple Support.
    3. You effectively disabled an essential OS X security feature. To learn how to use Gatekeeper read OS X: About Gatekeeper - Apple Support.
    4. A result of Gatekeeper being disabled may have contributed to inadvertently installing adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it. For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. Apple's instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully.

Having said that I agree that erasing your system and reconfiguring it as etresoft wrote may be the most expedient course of action. Write back if you want specific, step by step instructions. Backing up your system is a prerequisite so Step 1 may not be an option.

My video card on my iMac failed and exhibited the same reboot recycling with a similar message. I was never able to boot up successfully.

I found that rebooting with the "T" key depressed would make the IMac appear as an external hard drive if connected to another mac (I used Firewire cable).

I was able to transfer all of the info on the start up disk to a new iMac using Migration.

My video card was/is hard wired to the motherboard, so it was good luck on fixing that. Even a visit to the Apple Store was of no help.

    Hope this helps.

I have formatted the Hard Drive and reinstalled and the OS and it seems to be working fine besides the fact my computer has restarted 5 times tonight with an unexpected error. My housemate has a Macbook Pro which is doing the same thing, has anyone else had this error? (I can't see any other details which it provides)
