Q: MacBook Pro 2010 Model keeps crashing!

Hi all, I have came across quite a substantial problem with my MacBook Pro.

When I am running a few programs, my laptop will restart but instead of restarting, a plain white screen will emerge. I will then have to shut down the MacBook and restart it. This is irritating as I use this laptop for DJ-ing and it is of course cutting out in the midst of me doing something, same applies for any web pages I have up on Google Chrome as it doesn't let me restore the previous session. May I add that I only started to notice this problem once I converted to Yosemite. Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Paul

That's not a kernel panic report, but Linc Davis has posted specific directions to find them.

As already mentioned, the app crash log shows you have adware installed.

There are likely valid, legit extensions for Chrome, but it is like malware itself--it's not that bad, but close.

Regardless, the adware you installed was likely installed when you downloaded a likely valid, legit program from a shady download site. Never download anything from anywhere except the App Store and the developer's website. CNet and Softpaedia are well-known for bundling various crap with the legitimate downloads. It is almost impossible to select the correct checkboxes and options to not install the crapware with the legit software.

I used to use MacUpdate to find software because they used to provide a direct link to the developer's website. They don't seem to have that anymore.

That type of panic seems to be caused in some cases by starting up an older Mac from a third-party SSD. Check the SSD manufacturer's website for a firmware update.

    Hi Tombley,

In the left top corner of your screen is an Apple logo. Click on that and select About this Mac. On the GUI that opens, select System Report. In the left pane of the new window that opens select Sata/Sata Express and post the output of the bottom right window. That will give the harddisk information of your Mac.

SSD is an abbreviation for Solid State Disk. Lots have had one installed post facto after the warrantee expired and they wanted to increase the performance. On the manufacturers website you may find Firmware updates

The original hard drive was replaced with a solid-state storage device by a previous owner. That device is causing the problem.

    Hi Paul,

From what I understand here your firmware on the SSD might be outdated. However, they have warnings posted suggesting possible data loss during the update process. They also have the procedures posted on their site. Take your time, read through all of it, making notes as you go along and ensure that you fully understand the process fully.

I suggest once again, verification of Backups of your SSD in the first instance. The OS and applications can be downloaded and installed again during a fresh install, the data should be protected. That should have implicit value for you. It includes proprietary music and video. iTunes purchases can be downloaded again, check, check and check.

Backup your keychain, also to the iCloud, if possible.

Carefully note your different system settings, as you had it for your system. Be pedantic about it.

Therafter, you could concern yourself with the processes and the procedure for the Firmware update. Verify that you fully understand the full process and the procedures in sequence.

If you have a second Mac available, you might look at Target Mode as well to attempt the fix. That provides you at least with a stable platform.

Ask, if you need more advice.

    Holding thumbs

    Leo

Before updating the firmware read and understand all the relevant instructions and precautions wrt your SSD and follow that as explained here on the site. Then double check that you have done that and repeat the verification.

This according to the website is the tool required to install the updated firmware.

    Hi Paul,

The ISO should download into your Downloads folder as OCZ_Bootable_Tools_v4.9.0.634.iso. If you double click on that, it will open a "CDROM Drive" on your desktop with the Firmware Update Tool stuff on it to update your firmware. Be sure to take note of all the Precautions listed on their site which is applicable to your SSD (Vertex4). Carefully follow the instructions.

Be sure that your backups are safe and disconnected from the Mac. The Mac should be bare with nothing, except power connected to it.

If you take it to the Apple Store? Sure! they might charge you, but they should also be able to assist you.

    Have fun

    Leo
