Q: imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2

I notice another user has posted today 21st Jan 2015, the same problem I have had for a couple of days.

I have an iPad Air, an iPhone 5S and an iMac. Using my iPad on Saturday 18th suddenly couldn't see my imessages or use Facetime (I'd used FT half an hour before it all went); kept on getting Activation error on both Apps. BUT ONLY ON MY IPAD AIR?!

My iPhone and iMac work absolutely fine and I can continue to use both with imessage and Facetime. I have so far done the following, as advised by Apple Support and my local Apple Genius Bar appointment today:

  • Hard reset. Used home button and off button to reset. Didn't work
  • Reset Network settings. Didn't work
  • Reset All settings. Didn't work
  • Backed up and Restored iPad. Tried to log in to iMessage and Facetime from as new setup before restoring backup. Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "deep restore". Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "set up as brand new iPad" process. Didn't work
  • Logged out of Apple ID on iPhone then tried logging in to same Apple ID on iPad. Didn't work
  • Apple confirmed my Apple ID is correctly verified on their system.

Apple have now escalated my issue to their Engineering Team, so I hope they can fix, but the Apple guy in the store said he'd never come across this problem before.

I have been told IT IS NOT a hardware issue, it has to a a software issue, but it sounds more like me that it's an Apple verification issue on their servers?

If anyone has come across this, or can provide any other ideas I'd be most grateful. I still have use of imessage and Factime on my iPhone and iMac, so its more frustration that I have an expensive iPad Air that is missing paid-for functionality that I expect Apple to address and nothing more.

Thanks in advance

iPad Air, iOS 8.1.2

I phoned Apple support and they have confirmed my case is escalated, and engineers are investigating.

sounds like an 8.1.x patch system-wide might be on the way in the next couple of weeks!

This happened to me beginning yesterday and have done all the things you have suggested outside of going into the apple store as I am in Brussels on work. Both my iPhones work fine, its just my iPad air. Since i hadn't updated my software in weeks and no other changes were made, it has to be something with Apple servers. Keep us updated! This is how I communicate with my family when I am away so I am very frustrated

Count me in on the same issue.  Just noticed this issue when I received a Facetime call on my iPhone but it did not connect with my iPad as it usually does.  After reading these threads I found that my iMessage on my iPad Air is also not working.  Everything is working fine on both my iPhone 6, iPhone 5, and iPad 2.  Am reporting now to Apple Support.

Add me to the ongoing problem,  it will be interesting to see what the genius bar says to me at my appt tomorrow. I called support today and had already tried all of the possible suggested fixes. I use to  work for Apple and the tier one support guy was clueless. This probably isn't his fault. Apple did not always share information about problems or suggested fixes and then they would flag you for escalating things to a tier 2 analyst    This seems to be a system wide problem. I understand that crap happens but at what point would it kill them to post something on the website. Once it was apparent that  restoring the device from a backup or setting it up as a new device wasn't going to work. Id have appreciated knowing this before  rather than after as I wait from all of my apps to restore

This should've been reported on the System Status page long ago...as of now, it's not mentioned at all.

Mine too stopped working during the day in Jan 20. Was ready to do a total restore, but may wait. So frustrating. My iPad is not an air, the unit right before, whatever that number is! Ha!

I am having this same error activation code since yesterday as well.  So frustrating> And if by chance it actually lets me sign in it almost instantly turns itself off.

Okay...so if enough of us keep posting maybe they'll do something.  Same thing happened to me about two days ago on my iPad.  It is not new, about 2 years old. Stopped recognizing apple ID's when using iMessage.  Followed the advise and reset all my settings.  When I tried to open iMessage and FaceTime I got the same error message you all are mentioning....  So frustrated!

Just got off phone with senior adviser. He said he actually had same issue himself and after the usual resets didn't work he reset his modem and router and that did the trick. And when he came to work he got a lot of calls for same issue. Whatever Apple did yesterday for iCloud to go down, messed up the communication with the network providers it looks like. Try resetting modem first wait a few seconds than plug router back in. Or call network provider and have them do automatic reset. And try another wifi network outside of home to see if it works then. Sadly resetting my router and modem didn't work but will try another network later to see. Fingers crossed it will.
