Q: uprgraded to yosemite all good but iphoto crashes every time I attempt to upgrade the photo library

Hi all,

This is driving me insane.

I have uprgraded to yosemite all good but iphoto crashes every time I attempt to upgrade the photo library:-

I have upgraded to yosemite 3 times in case thats where there problem was - no.

I removed and reinstalled the new iphoto program about 5 times - no avail.

I have installed iphoto library upgrader but it says that my library does not need it.

I have installed iphoto9.1 update but it states that it cannot be installed on the disc as iphoto 9.0 or later must be installed but i have installed the latest version?

I have even upgraded the server and i paid for this.

When i open iphoto in applications it will open then state that i need to upgrade the library - i am happy to do this.

I agree to this then iphoto crashes and closes before doing anything else.

I have also tried holding the option button and opening iphoto but it crashes all the same.

I am at a loss what to do. I could not access my library at all but i managed to find all my pics in finder so i have backed everything up and deleted all the files in the hope this would fix it - nope. Still the same.

Does anyone have any suggestions?? Please oh please, this has taken days and countless wifi hours...

TIA...

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

An update can only be installed if an older full version is installed.  You need iPhoto 9.6 with Yosemite.

I have even upgraded the server and i paid for this.

Which server? What does it have to do with iPhoto?

Where is your iPhoto Library stored? on your system drive or on an external drive?

I agree to this then iphoto crashes and closes before doing anything else.

Please post the crash log you are seeing, when iPhoto crashes - the first 50 lines should suffice to see the error message.

    hi Leonie

i was just trying whatever I could think of or find on the apple help really.

When iPhoto closes it doeant show a crash report, it just closes suddenly.

please let me know if i can locate the crash report to show here.

i Upgraded Yosemite then Iphoto then it just would not work which is why I'm so frustrated.

obviously I'm not the most tech savvy person but I'm also not the least which is why I tried so many different things on the off chance it might work.

    THanks for replying!

    Hi Terence,

TThanks, I will try this tomorrow and hopefully it will work.

i Just want iPhoto to open properly so I can use it. I'm not too concerned about getting my old photos out of the library as I have them backed up elsewhere.

i Find iPhoto a good piece of software and therefore would like to continue to use it!

now here's hoping it will open for me after this!

    thanks a lot!

Have you tried TD's recommendation to rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager?

When iPhoto closes it doesn't show a crash report, it just closes suddenly.

There is no message at all, when iPhoto closes? No panel with any message?

if there are any crash logs, you can find them, when you launch the Console application (from the folder Applications > Utilities). The application crash logs will show in the log list in the sidebar, in the section "User Diagnostic Reports":  Look for an entry with "iPhoto" in the name and the filename extension .crash".
