Q: After upgrading to Yosemite computers on my network are not showing up in shared on finder

Hi Everyone!

I have two mac computers and iMac (early 2009 version) and Mac Book Air (late 2010 version). Both are on the latest version of Yosemite 10.10.

Ever since upgrading my computers to this OS, I noticed that the "Shared"  section of the finder no longer shows the respective other computer. I can get to the computer by "Go/Connect to Server" and typing in the ComputerName.local. I can also control each other's screen by using screen share, but only via iCloud. Airdrop also works, but in case of one computer AirDrop is not listed in Favorites and works only when I have both launch airdrop at the same time.

What's interesting as well is that my Time Capsule does who up on both computers in the "shared" part of the finder.

Both computers' settings in System Preferences/Sharing have not changed since Mountain Lion.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Thanks, my screen share eventually does connect but it will not do it until my mac mini has been in the finder shared folder for a few minutes.

Then it works fine, just slow to connect. Eventually it drops of of finder again after some idle time. I actually have a case with apple support

now and I am waiting for them to get back to me.  I also read that OS 10.10.2 is out now in Beta but not sure if this is being addressed in it.

This is a work-around for computers not showing up in Yosemite, but it can actually speed up your work as you don't have to select the folders on the external computer every time you log in.

After connecting the computer using finder "Connect to server", go into "System Preferences" "Users and Groups" "Login Items" , select "+", browse to the  computer and "Add" a folder on the computer that you want to mount when you log in.

The computer will then reconnect each time you log in.

Thanks Colin Sutton.   To do what you suggested, I had to turn on file sharing on my Mac Mini (destination computer).   I use my Mac Mini as a music server and don't share files.   But the good news is that by turning on File sharing and mounting the Mini, it now stays in the Finder on the source computer (my iMac).

    Thanks for the tip.

Man I wish it was that easy.

I still get unable to connect.

I just got a new Mac with Yosemite 10.10, and I just upgraded to 10.10.1.

At first, I also have this problem of not seeing my Mac servers on my local network.

Then, in Finder, I click on "Go --> Computer" and all the Mac servers on my local network shows up in the Finder's sidebar.

(I have also configured Finder's Preferences to not show "Tags," though I do not believe that really affects much of anything.)

    Good luck!

Thanks, have not tried that, I will have to wait for the mac to self remove itself again then I will see if that loads it back on.

i finally got my 2 macs to work, but can't tell which solution from the contributors did the trick. here's the rough sequence:

after i tried "BAWMAN-CS" suggestion (Finder, click "Go --> Computer") on mac 1, mac 2's finder showed mac 1 correctly. then i went to mac 2 and did the same, but there was no effect. i then went to mac 2 and tried unchecking & checking those options under sharing, everything works as expected. so far the solution sticks.

    hope this helps. good luck!

    TEMP SOLUTION:

For those that have a Mac that is dropping off the shared network.

Reboot the server computer, after that it should appear are your network.

Now on your server computer do the following:

System Preferences > Energy Saver > Slide Computer sleep to "Never"

    Screen Shot 2014-12-15 at 10.18.45 AM.png

So far mine has held on to the network for over 24 hours, its a record here and still going.

This is just a work around and not a solution.

I seem to have a slightly different solution. Not sure whether to be pleased or sorry finding others share this problem. Under Mountain Lion, my server iMac showed as a Device in the sidebar and clicking it showed folders, opening one put a temporary folder icon on the Desktop. With OS 10.10.1 Initially  no server iMac showed at all, not even a Shared heading.

I re-ran the Shared folders on the server iMac. Now on the recipient computer I see the server computer as a sidebar item under Shared. Click that and I get a Finder pane showing folders. Along the top of the pane it says I'm connected with my iCloud sign in. I don't know if that means that stuff has to go to iCloud and then back to the recipient computer. I don't think I'm actually logged in.

I only wanted to use iCloud for "Find my computer" because of this sort of unpredictable behaviour.

I wonder if there's something one can set under Network to avoid this iCloud stuff?.

I had the same problem between my 2009 iMac and 2013 MBA (both running 10.10).  The following worked for me:

Go to System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing > Options: Make sure "Share files and folders using AFP" is selected on both machines (it was off on my iMac).

Hope this works for you too...

    No such luck.

Mine pop up but drop off after Mac Mini goes into sleep mode.

The work around is not to let Mac Mini sleep.

The solution to the problem is still not out from Apple, nor do I expect one any more.

Keeping my iMac from sleeping does not help either.

it's not just file and screen sharing ... iTunes home share disappears too!

I have this exact same problem, and I haven't been able to find any remedies for it yet either   I'd love a fix.

Having the same issues after upgrading both a mac mini (acting as headless server) and my main machine (Imac). My network devices weren't showing in the Finder sidebar but I could VNC direct to the ip address, sometimes. I realized by turning off the firewall on the headless machine, everything seemed to work fine. So after reading this link Device discovery does not work with Yosemite and "allowing" discoveryd under the Firewall rules on the Imac (not the headless server), the server finally showed up in the Finder sidebar allowing quick access as usual.

    Hope this helps.
