Q: Yosemite memory out of control?

Upgraded to Yosemite on MacBook Pro -- memory of kernel_task runs out of control (>6GB) in approx 48 hours after using -- initially did a clean install of Yosemite, and only loaded apps that are needed.

Etrecheck reports the following with many process having to be killed due to me pressure.

Any ideas what is triggering the men usage and eventual swap to death of the Retina?

kernel_task is at 6.8GB RAM although etrecheck doesn't report it, 1.1 GB of swap according to iStat in addition

Huge number of Page Outs -- faulty memory chips perhaps?

Uninstall Cocktail and see how it runs.

One of the above kernel extensions is running wild.  All of these, when loaded are part of kernel_task.

With 16GB or RAM, your kernel_task should be hovering around 1GB (plus or minus).  My 16GB Macbook Pro has a 1.25GB kernel_task.

You can experiment by booting into Safe Mode, which will not load any of the 3rd party additions, and you can see if your kernel_task remains stable

I personally had issues with iStat Menus where it had a memory leak, and it that made kernel_task take up many GB of memory. They say they fixed the memory leak, but it's worth uninstalling iStat Menus and seeing if it's related to the problem.

30 GB of free space is getting a bit tight. Free up some more space if you can.

Soundflower 1.6.2 is from Feb 2012

    https://code.google.com/p/soundflower/downloads/list

The download has a removal tool if you don't use it, remove it. At the very least get the latest version installed. It doesn't look like a version has been made for 10.10 so I'd remove it.

I would also check that all the other launch agents & daemons in the system are up to date.

Isn't Akamai's software used to speed up their network as well as give you 'quicker downloads'? It seems a bit generous of you to dedicate resources to them, does it benefit you?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction -- turned out to be the TDIXController from Toast that was out of control. I had just installed the latest v12 version from Corel specifically for Yosemite, and well, guess they still have a lot of work to do. Kernel Task now hovers around 2GB (guess Parallels is pretty heavy memory wise as its the only software still installed as a kernel resource). Finder still is a bit crazy, always going to 2.2 GB and up, so its now the biggest culprit of out of control memory. Hope Apple gets a chance to clean it up in one of the point updates.

Also removed Akamai, and upgraded to the latest Soundflower - have to see how Soundflower works now, as it doesn't seem to be under development anymore. Great tool for passing audio from one app to another.

iStat Menus v5.03 is stable for me on Yosemite, and I use it a lot to track down perf issues.

Removing Cocktail neither helped or hurt the memory, so I'll probably re-install it again after a few days of stability.

It's pretty much useless, but if it makes you feel better having something useless hacked into the OS, enjoy.

I've just upgraded to 10.10.2 and have the same problem but for me it's Mail sucking up all the CPU (>106% !) and memory (>2.7Gb) and rising while doing nothing). Everything runs fine when I quit Mail. Very disturbing behaviour!

Create a new topic describing what you see. These issues may sound similar but they rarely are. People will focus on you if you create the thread, otherwise the original poster is the focus here.

Have to agree -- I haven't seen this issue at all, so must be something different triggering it. My CPU is at 5% and memory is stable -- I only use Apple Mail for iclioud accounts, I tried hooking Gmail to it a while back and it was erratic. Didn't really need it, so I don't use Mail to access to other e-mail providers.

Finder does go out of control memory-wise on 10.10.X so far, if you have Show Icon Preview checked under Finder -> View Options. Memory climbed to well over 4 gig used and the only way to release it was a reboot. My only theory was that it was trying to cache every image it saw in to memory, as it also made scrolling through any folder in Finder (as well as Chrome) very sluggish and sticky. Unchecking the box now allows extremely fast and fluid scrolling. Looks like another Apple feature still under development.
