Q: Startup sound Yosemite

Just spoke with support and there is no way of switching off the startup noise short of remembering to mute the machine before powering down.

Third party products available to do this simple and useful job as it wakes others in the house if the machine is used in the early morning.

Can't quite believe simple features like this are not there to be honest!

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

IIt is not recommended to mute or remove the startup tone! The tone is there for a reason, it is part of the startup diagnostics. You cannot do a PRAM reset without it. If you concerned about the sound the solution is simple, leave the computer on 24/7 and simply put the display to sleep when not in use. Only shut down the computer when you will be away for extended periods such as going on vacation for 2+ weeks.

I don't want to leave the Mac on 24/7, that is just daft. I appreciate there may be a reason to have some noise when it starts but the current volume means waking up the rest of the house if I start work early or late at night. A quiet chime would be fine. Other people use the machine so the volume gets changed during the day.

you cant control it and even if you connect a headset it will still play out of the imac speakers

use feedback if  you wish apple to change it they dont read the user helping user forums for advice

I don't buy the fact it is an important diagnostic tool - what if I remember to mute and shutdown the Mac? When I restart I will be missing this crucial feature!

Found a simple solution that works for Yosamite:

Auto Mute.app [ http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/35207/auto-mute ] fixes this really annoying feature.

You do realize what that "annoying feature" as you call is telling you don't you?

It is telling you that your Mac has passed POST, Power On Self Test. Which can be valuable information in case of trouble.

    It's annoying, plain and simple.

Having a startup sound is fine, but is there a reason I can't set the volume? Does the loudness of the sound provide any additional indication, maybe my Mac really aced the POST tests and screamed out Ya Hooo.

A quiet startup sound is just as useful. After all, if I need to be listening for the startup sound because of a problem or using startup modifers, then I will be listening carefully. Having it wake the household only serves to reinforce how annoying it is that Apple thought I needed to be yelled at whenever my Mac starts up.

Then you clearly do not know much about OS X, please Google why OS X startup tones mean, here is a good article (by Apple) to get you started.

It is also valuable to not awaken the rest of the family. A volume control is a wonderful thing although the technology to develop it several years off

    most macs sold are laptops

most macs are only shut down or restarted in extreme circumstances and software updates

most MacBooks just have their lid close and most macs are just put to sleep

this is likely why is works as it works and why I would not hold my breach about it changing any time soon

Quite agree. It may be important, but WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE SO LOUD??? If there are sounds to indicate problems (and the link above is the first I knew of this) then surely it only needs to be loud if there is a problem. A 'system OK' sound can be quiet, or non-existent. I don't need to be shouted at by my iMac every time it is switched on unless there is a fault.

    I'm with you.

This is ancient stuff hanging around from macs of yesteryear

why not a simple onscreen message with an acknowledgement

or a wolf whistle just to boost my ego.

big ta-das just sound like bragging

and a big hint to the burglars

you think a company that delights in telling us about the

huge amounts of billions it makes could come up with

something a bit more subtle and in keeping with their design philosophy.

    ta-da.
