What are the advantages--if any--of upgrading my OS Mavericks to OS Yosemite?

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.

    Mostly, it is the integration with iOS. If you Mac is older than 2012 or you don't have any iOS devices, there isn't much for you.

    One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

    Thank you for the advice. I do have plenty of IOS devices, so I will check into this.

    I understand what you are explaining--and it makes sense to do a 'test drive' if possible. I am just concerned about the numerous complaints online from those who had difficulty downloading/upgrading and then were disappointed in what they actually ended up with compared to the OS they started with.

    How old are they? Those fancy new features in Yosemite won't work with iOS devices made before 2013 or perhaps 2014.

    They work with any iOS device that can run iOS 8, which I think goes back at least as far as the 5, and likely the 4S.

    Now, as Macs go, many of the features only work with 2012 and later Macs.

    If only that were true. One of the few new features that I have actually wanted to use was AirDrop. That actually works in iOS 7, but not on an iPad 3.

     

    Apple only designs new features to work on new Macs and devices. They may work on older products and they may not.

    Again, wise advice which I will surely follow should I weigh the pros and cons of Yosemite and decide it might be worth the upgrade. Thank you.

    I've got an iPad from 2012. Don't know which it is. It runs iOS 8 and I can AirDrop with my 2012 Mini.

    Does your iPad run iOS 7 or 8? If so, it should be able to AirDrop to any iOS device and to any 2012 or later Mac (2013 Mac Pro).

    Understood. Our products are all updated to IOS 8 and up-to-date.

    Nope. http://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204144

    Even that limited list in the Apple support article is incorrect. It says any of those can AirDrop with "a Mac with OS X Yosemite". That is wrong. You are the one that is correct about the Mac support, not Apple.

    Ahh, yes. I was going by this, http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/, but I didn't see the Lightning connector.
