Q: 27" iMac 3TB drive manufacturer

Does anyone know which hard drive manufacture Apple uses for their 3TB Fusion drives in their iMacs?  I'm considering a 3TB Fusion drive in my next iMac but have seen reports that Seagate's 3TB drives have a high failure ratecompared to HGST (formerly Hitachi).  I know Apple has used Hitachi in the past but don't know what they're using in their current Macs.

Thanks

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10), 32GB

Interesting question.  I checked my system profile & it appears, Apple is the manufacturer - Model:    APPLE HDD.  At least for my model iMac which is:  Screen_Shot_2015-01-26_at_Mon__Jan_26__2015-1_31_27_PM.png

    Dan,

The fusion drives are a combination of a small SSD (usually about 120GB) and a standard internal HD. They are "fused" together using software that Apple has developed. Also, Apple uses multiple vendors for their HD's. If you goal is to purchase a Fusion drive and install it in your 2011 machine,  you can do this using your current HD and with the help of a SSD. However this is definitely not a do-it-yourself  project unless you are extremely comfortable working on the internals of an iMac and are UNIX conversant. I would recommend contacting an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and ask them if they have the ability to do this for you.

Thanks for the reply.  I think they say Apple HDD now, but knowing that Apple doesn't make hard drives, I looking for the actual vendor.  I think there's a way to see who the vendor is but I can't remember how.

It was through System Profile (which I already checked).  If you want to know who the actual vendor is (if there is one), call Apple.  Might as will confirm directly from the horses mouth!

Please post back & let us know if you find out.  Thanks in advance.

I'm not looking to update my iMac but to replace it with a new one.  My iMac has been running terrible since updating to Yosemite with web pages and emails coming up blank and long pauses with the spinning wheel, 30 seconds to sometimes a minute long, in between task and mouse clicks.   I'm having to reinstall Yosemite every 2-3 weeks to keep it running.  I would have thought my iMac would have enough power and memory to go another 2-3 years but no such luck!

My 2011 27" runs Yosemite perfectly. I suspect there may be other issues, if you want to try and still use yours I'd suggest posting an EtreCheck report of your system and we can then look for any obvious issues.

Here's the results from EtreCheck.  Should I delete the 2 startup items in red and also delete the several "killed" items?  Also, do you know of any reason why Safari's memory usage continues to grow through usage?  It will get up to 10GB or more if I don't quit the program and relaunch.  I noticed that others have complained about this, as well.

    Thanks for your help!

There are a couple of things I see, first is you have both VM Ware and also Virtual Box installed, likely to run MS Windows. If you still use Windows on the machine then choose which virtualization app you want to use and uninstall the other. If you no longer run Windows then uninstall it and all the virtualization apps following the developers instructions.

Next your system has the AMD Radeon HD 6970M installed, are you are aware of iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program - Apple Support?

As a matter of fact I had my video board replaced under that program a few months ago when it completely died.  Thanks for noticing, though.

I saw that virtual box was installed.  I don't remember ever using it and it was dated 2011 so that was the first thing I deleted.  I also uninstalled Sophos antivirus last weekend when I reinstalled Yosemite thinking that may be the problem, even though I could't find any reports of such.

The slowness, blank mail and web site problems start about the 2nd to 3rd week after reinstalling Yosemite so time will tell.

Thanks for your help.  You just might save me 3 grand on not having to replace this iMac.

How did you delete Virtualbox? You don't want to leave the kernel extensions behind.

com.Logitech.Control Center seems to have version 3.9.1 out for 10.9, you have 3.6.0 installed. It's unclear if they have a version for 10.10, if not consider another app (I use ControllerMate instead of LCC - but it can be confusing ) check roaring apps.com for an idea on if other users say it works on 10.10.

Another user recently claimed that removing a recent Toast helped, I think it was the latest update to com.roxio.TDIXController that mangled the Mac? It may be worth removing in the short term as a test?

Re: Yosemite memory out of control?

The startup items are now unused. It's probably best to look for uninstallers to make sure that you remove all the pieces of this software…

noip2: Path: /Library/StartupItems/noip2 (they have a newer client that you have installed already)

VirtualBox: Path: /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox (you may have already got this)

I'd also look for updates to the many 3rd party system extensions you have installed.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'm finding a few things that need to be deleted or updated.  I always wondered how much "old stuff" is left behind when updating the OS or when migrating to a new computer.  I've been using Macs since System 6 and OS X from 10.0, so I have a lot of old history that may be stored in the nooks and crannies of my disk.

I still have some cleaning up to do so thanks for your help!

    NOTE:

You would be wise to backup before deleting any kexts's, take care not to delete the wrong ones & reboot straight after deleting them.

Panther was Mac OS 10.3, so yup I'd say they are old

I don't know why you would need the 'usbpart' & 'netpart' pieces of that software now. You could contact them for removal instructions since there doesn't seem to be any Mac downloads or other instructions that I can see on the site.

Otherwise you can remove the kexts from /System/Library/Extensions & reboot. You will need admin privileges to delete those kexts (com.Belcarra.iokit.USBLAN_netpart and com.Belcarra.iokit.USBLAN_usbpart).

    'Indigo v1.8.3 Installer' http://www.indigodomo.com/downloads.html

That download installs the kext & nothing else so rip out that IndigoOverrides.kext & delete the app if you have it ?

Smithmicro have a ton of info on removing Stuffit…

See if you can find any of the items - it will depend on what version was installed.

    Or try the support pages…

HP also have support info too, find the model on their site & see if there are Mac specific removal instructions.

This turned up when I searched "mac remove hp_designjet_series.kext"

    http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=4214021&docId=mmr_kc -0101801-6&docLocale=en_US

It's mostly the kext that is disconcerting, since you have a HP1200 connected you will want to look for any new drivers after deleting that kext.

I do not know what remote control USBLAN is

If you are unsure about anything, ask again here, it is easier than trying to fix a system that cannot boot because of a mistake.

    Good luck
