Q: Login to icloud drive from ipad / backup individual photos only

I'm looking to use icloud drive to backup individual RAW images from my Sony camera. I'm thinking to load those images from my camera to the ipad then copy those images to icloud drive to store there. After that I would delete the images from the ipad. I'm not looking for the photo app to automatically sync all the photos on my ipad to icloud.

I've set up my icloud drive account from my mac and all looks ready to go, but i find if I try to login to icloud from the ipad I don't get the login dialog page but the apple instruction to setup the ipad. The ipad is setup like I want:

icloud photo library is off

my photo stream is off

icloud photo sharing is on

Problem with photo stream is that it is automatic. I want to select individual files or folders to load to icloud, not everything automatically.

Thanks anyone for any tips!

I assume when you deleted the file on your computer you didn't do that from Finder > iCloud Drive.

And that when you signed back in to iCloud Drive the file that was there was at Finder > iCloud Drive.

Oh I see that the file is actually present at finder > icloud drive, which I guess is my local folder, so it did sync the computer with the cloud.

I guess there's no way to do what I want then. Don't know why they wouldn't make that an option.

Yes you can keep files in the cloud and not on your Mac. Just disable iCloud Drive on your Mac and use the web portal to organise your documents in the cloud.

Thanks very much for your help. This looks like it's the solution.

I've accessed icloud drive from the ipad using the desktop version of the icloud website. I can also upload images individually from there.

So it seems you can't use the Photos iPad/iPhone app to select a photo or photos on the device and upload them to iCloud Drive.

Seems you can only add photos to iCloud Drive from a mac Or maybe from a pc via iCloud.com.

You also can't log into iCloud Drive from iPad or iPhone, only seems to work from os x or windows.

Hopefully you can eventually add photos to iCloud Drive from iOS devices like you can add documents from the iWork apps to iCloud drive From iOS devices.
