My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

User uploaded file

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

To all staingate victims--

Apple has you covered. They know they f'd up big time so they are offering to fix the screens under their "quality program." No warranty needed. It was a manufacturer's defect that took them a while to figure out. Just visit an Apple Store, drop off your MacBook, and you'll have a new, stain-free screen in under a week.

I brought my MacBook Pro into the Manhattan Beach store on Saturday, no hassles. They estimated five business days but probably sooner than that. I have my work laptop in the meantime so it's not too inconvenient.

Hope this puts some of you at ease. Again, just bring your computer in to an Apple Store and they will take care of it free of charge.

Yes this solution should works. Not perfect but it should works. I am looking for good anti-glare film. Maybe something like matt foil.

And how can we clean, alcohol or aceton? When Apple say this can happen only with window cleaner alcohol should be enough

Hi all,

I went through several online discussions and collected all available informations (username, country, 13"/15", year, replaced/rejected) from users claiming to be affected by this issue in a list. I also tried to eliminate doubles which posted in different locations.

So far I found 116, mostly MBPr from 2012/2013, some from 2014, but regarding the fact that not all users gave this information mileage may vary.

Is there any information about the total number of Retinas built in 2012/2013?

Best regards

So far I can tell problem applies to MacBook Pro Retina 13, 15 described as "Late 2013" , 75% in my survey. No "early/late/mid 2014" .

Two weeks ago I tested a lot of MacBookPro Retina 13 inch from:

-Saturn (a german big reseller for electronic stuff)

-Gravis (a big Apple reseller)

-Medi Max (like Saturn, but smaller)

-Apple Store

All devices at one day. I used the keyboard/touchpad feeling and I saw a difference between the keyboards:

-one version had the normal keyboard (like the keyboards from the normal MacBookPro). The keys where a little big higher and the sound was more thud (I hope somebody can understand.

-the other version with thinner keys, more into the chase from the device. The keyboard sounds are more jingling

I think, that the second Version is a newer version with thinner keys which have no contact to the display when the device is closed.

Hi!

I have the same problem. I bought my Mac (2012 mid) two weeks ago in a Cortland shop (largest Polish Apple products distributor) as a used computer with Apple Care (I've 9 months guarantee). The first spot appeared a week ago, in the upper left corner. Now you can see the badges of the first traces of the touchpad and keyboard.

I got the idea (if someone check please opinion) to purchase such protection film's for ex. Moshi. Perhaps it will stop the process of separation antiglare coating.

I bought device is about six months ago. I was willing to pay for a change shield with anti-reflective coating, but I turned out that the elimination of the defect requires replacing the matrix completely, in my town is worth at least 13 000 rubles ($200). Apple, do you think it is normal ?! I demand replacement of the display and protection from such defects in the future."

Евгений.

$200 (13000RUB?) normaly it costs about $500. Are you sure?

those are keyboard key marks from finger oils transferred to the screen.

Thats 200% as clear as day.

Yes, acid on your fingers (and oils) transferred to the keys, THEN to the display when closed.

but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage

No.........thats stripped AR coating FROM the screen, not ON THE SCREEN.

Youre thinking its something THERE, when its something MISSING

I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem,

Dont dare use that, that will ruin your screen.

if water and microfiber arent working,

They wont work, because your hand oils and acids have stripped the AR coating off part of the screen. Keep cleaner hands when using your Mac.

Some people have naturally VERY HIGH acidic skin excretions, you may have this issue.

Thank god, I don't have this issue (yet) on my 15" MBPr. Because of this topic, I've ordered a screen protector and I'm not going to clean the screen anymore until the protector is here. I don't even dare to clean it anymore.

I hope a screen protector will keep this problem away.

Hi all,

I have good news: I had the same issue as you and went to my APR. First, they told me that Apple refused to recognize it as a default so i had to pay if i wanted i to be repaired. But then, i went to an official Apple Store in Geneva (Switzerland) and they accepted to change it under my Apple Care. So i got a new screen (not only the glass) and a new keyboard, so maybe those stains had indeed something to do with the keyboard as it has been said previously. I have a 15'' MBP Retina mid. 2012 for more details.

I really hope that this will also work for you guys and if i can maybe help you, let me know.
