Q: MacBook Pro Shutting Down Without Warning

At least once a day, my MacBook shuts down and restarts.  I haven't noticed any correlation with an opened program.  I copied the error message, but since I have NO expertise in software, it's meaningless to me.  Here's the beginning of the message:

*** Panic Report ***

panic(cpu 1 caller 0xffffff800341e80a): Kernel trap at 0xffffff7f83a3a93e, type 14=page fault, registers:

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rich

Are you advocating not using antivirus for my macbook?  Or is it that Norton isn't a good choice because of its voracious RAM appetite?

Norton is not a good choice because it has only mediocre detection of Mac malware, and is well-known for causing systemwide (sometimes severe) performance and stability problems. The fact that there's a Symantec kernel extension in the backtrace of your kernel panic shows that Norton is causing your problems, so I concur with everyone else that it must be uninstalled.

As for the need for anti-virus software, be aware that there are anti-malware features built into Mac OS X that currently block all known Mac malware. This does not catch unknown malware, of course, nor does it do a good job of blocking adware... however, the same must be said of anti-virus software as well. The only thing that can reliably protect you is you.

Barry, Ogelthorpe, and my ginger -

First, thank you all for spending time helping me with the shut down issue.  I rarely posts questions on forums like this and when I do I'm blown away by the available expertise and how giving people are of their time.  So again, thank you.

My question about "industry standard" was not meant to be offensive or challenging and I apologize if it came across that way.  I'm ignorant concerning software technology and this is the first time in my 5 short years of using a mac that I ever heard that anti-virus isn't needed.  After reading your reply I poked around the Internet and indeed that is what I'm seeing.  I will follow the instructions to get Norton AV off my mac (and the others in the household).  And hopefully I'll experience fewer shutdowns.

    Thanks again for help!

Trust me, no offense was taken.  I simply did not understand what your definition may have been regarding that term and my response was some what speculative.

    Ciao.
