Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Tom

After much frustration the Create a new network wifi service worked for me. Thanks NickNish! I wonder why this worked? This is a WPA-2 corporate Wifi problem, as mentioned with earlier posters.

Hi! Tried everything mentioned to fix wifi on Imac 27/ 2011 and almost gave up. Installed everything clean, even running the latest beta now. Nothing worked and wifi still dropped all the time and had to be manually restarted with turning off/on airport. Made the whole mac useless to me.

The fix then came with something I have not read here so far and it is working. The trick for me did Kext utility. I dont know what it does but it works. Downloaded it, ran it and I was back. No disconnection the whole day, which is the best I had in weeks. To people with similar issues and Mac, give this a shot. Here the Link:

Seemed not working for me even after switching off the bluetooth. i think this issue will be addressed in the next upgrade release.

I guess one thing I would never do is download and run some unknown Kext Utility from a web site in Russia...  Ok, from anywhere in that case!

Just switched from PC to my first mac (Air 2014) and so far I'm super dissapointed I'm the only one with a laptop at my work who almost never has internet. makes it impossible to work.

Note that the link is to turn off awdl0, which if you read the content in the link says:

"Note that some older Macs may not use AWDL to handle AirDrop/Handoff, in whiuch case using this trick may give you an error message such as "interface awdl0 does not exist." On the plus side, then you're not experiencing the related Wi-Fi slowdown issue to begin with."

Of course if you read this discussion, many of the people having issues have older Macs, so although it may be related to the new code added to handle awl0, this is far from a feasible workaround for many...

I had the same problem.  go to terminal and enter:

    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

You will have to do it every time you boot...ugh!

I see more refs to WiFried here, so just to re-iterate my experience WiFried helped me somewhat but the 12 step procedure outlined on page 121 has helped me more. No issues for a month. I spread the fix to people at work who have also reported improvement. Since it appears this is a complex issue this fix may not help everyone here, but it has definitely helped some of us.

Yes, unfortunately none of the workarounds work permanently. I don't think any exists at this point. I tried the 12 steps procedure and it did not make any difference for me. I would recommend people start with WiFried since it's easier to implement and it does disable awdl0 which seems to be causing some of the performance issues.

Well, I thought everything was resolved -- until last night and then again this morning. It's a tough one to diagnose, because WiFi drops are very infrequent for me. Last night and this morning I had problems connecting -- but I've gone for many, many days with zero issues. Sigh.

SNR is around 38 and Transmit Rate is 130 and steady, so I don't think it's an access point issue. I'm using 'n' only, bluetooth off. Interestingly, both events occurred after a wake-from-sleep, though, as I say, I went for well over a week without a problem.

A 13" MacBook Pro still running Mavericks has no issues at all -- ever.

Just a quick note to let you all know that 10.10.2 was just released. That's probably the best chance we have to resolve this issue.

I'm going to uninstall Wifried, reproduce the issue consistently and then upgrade to see if it fixes it.

Did anyone already updated to the new 10.10.2 just released? Did it fix the problem? I´ll only be at home in a few hours, so I´ll update it and pray for it. Even on the last beta released, the problem was still there. :/

Yep, I've just installed it. Prior my wifi issues were intermittent, now they're permanent. I'm typing this from another computer because 10.10.2 has destroyed my Macbook's WiFi connection. I'm now not able to obtain WiFi at all, not even by switching it off and switching it back on again. Because I live in a country area I cannot obtain broadband via any fixed service and our wireless modem is WiFi only. So thanks Apple. Well tested? Who's working in Apple nowadays? A bunch of 15 year olds?

This Apple is rotten. I'm now going to put all my efforts into installing Cinnamon Korora (a more polished and extensive form of Fedora).
