Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

    Still working well here.

    Bizarre.

If I don't post back then it's still fine.

    ARGHHHHHHHH

I knew it. As soon as I said it was fine it'd die.

Now I can't load any webpages again.

What is going inside Apple? Parties? Who is in charge there?

I'm now convinced 10.10.2 is another turd.

    Korora here I come.

How can 10.10.2 be worse than 10.10.1?

    How?

They even make the hardware. I'd understand this difficulty if they were writing software for hardware they didn't design.

How can Apple's software be *THIS* bad? My 10.10.2 mac's wifi has totally died.

With all respect to Apple, I've been a huge fan of everything since ever... but it's sad that we're having this type of an issue for over 3 months in a $3k computer, and feeling neglected by one of the biggest corporation in the world.

And the wifi icon in the menu displays a grey symbol with a cross through it, even as it managed to load Google's page before failing again.

NOW we've got your issue by the tail, ausappleuser! That sign means a hardware issue, possibly only becoming obvious through upgrading. There have been some reports in this thread that all WiFi problems were solved by replacing the Airport card and cable. Well, this seems to be your issue.

If flashing it to the newest firmware doesn't work, have the card replaced.

I bet your Airport card has a Broadcom chip on it. Seems to be notoriously flaky these days.

Thanks hexdiy but I think not. That symbol was displayed when I deleted all wifi settings and the interface. Then when I reconfigured the wifi, the symbol persisted despite loading a webpage. I then power cycled the machine and the symbol has not returned. That said, I'm utterly p!ssed at this and will be taking the laptop into the store, who I'll assume initially deny there being any problem and then break as many things as they try to fix.

The last time I returned to Mavericks from Yosemite the wifi was faultless, then I returned to Yosemite and it was faulty again.

    Yosemite is a turd.

After re-installing Yosemite 10.10.2 the wifi issues seem to be corrected.  I'll post again if I face any problem again.

Run command-D diagnostics at startup anyhow. If nothing turns up, then take it into the store.

And you may still have a near invisible cable or chip issue on your hands. Made obvious by Yosemite, possibly. Yes, it is a very intricate turd.

A diagnostic test on my mac did not detect any faults.

The cause may not be a "flaky wifi card" - there may be wifi cards installed that are not compatible with Yosemite. Apple may be changing such cards claiming falsely that they're faulty. It does seem rather odd that if I revert back to an older OS X then wifi is utterly faultless.

It is also very odd that given the size of this thread Apple's reply has been somewhat muted. An update was issued and all we've heard is "resolves an issue which may cause wifi to disconnect". Oh really? What is this issue? No? Nah... just call it an issue. Where's the detail? Apple loves that word: "issue". It appears in every update.

Wow.  I just installed 10.10.2 onto my Mac Pro and still having wi-fi connectivity issues. Same thing as before, about 30 seconds of working wi-fi and the "resolving host" each time I try to load a Website.

I'm so disappointed in Apple. I see their stock has gone down $10 since Yosemite was released.

    Note to self:

Take Turd to Apple Genius Bar.

Have 15 year old Genius (potentially sporting a new hip beard) turn Turd into computer with at least the ability of an SDS Sigma series.

    ARPANET and the Internet[edit]

The first message on the ARPANET was sent by UCLA student programmer Charley Kline, at 10:30 p.m, on October 29, 1969 from Boelter Hall 3420, the school's main building.[6] Supervised by Kleinrock, Kline transmitted from the university's SDS Sigma 7 host computer to the Stanford Research Institute's SDS 940 host computer. The message text was the word "login"; the "l" and the "o" letters were transmitted, but the system then crashed.

This is interesting - a little while ago I ran Apple's Hardware Test which found nothing wrong.

Today while running 10.10.2 I cannot start the test. I shut down the mac, wait a few secs, switch it on, as soon as I hear the boot chimes I press D and instead the login screen loads. I've tried D numerous times, command-D, option-D, shift-D, option-shift-D.... standing on my head while pressing D with my big toe. Nothing works.

Anything to do with no longer having a grey screen at boot up?

Actually, I assume the grey screen has gone for everyone who has upgraded to 10.10.2?
