Q: HELP>phone thinks headphones are plugged in?

Receive a call and no one can hear me speak unless I put on speaker phone. Try turning up volume and it says ( headphones), like phone thinks I have headphones plugged in. Any Ideas?

I Phone 4, iOS 4

None of this worked for me. Eventually I just grabbed a compressed air bottle and sprayed directly into the headphone jack, this worked immediately. Thanks for all the other suggestions.

    Hi

I can see this issue has been solved by a variety of issues. For me the alarm trick didn't work, neither did the reset. However, the thinly rolled up tissue, inserted into the (surprisingly deep) headphone socket worked instantly.

I too had a spilled water incident and discovered that when I withdrew the tissue there was some dampness on the tip (no jokes) and clearly, the absorbent tissue collected whatever residual water had remained.

As for the person who spilled hot chocolate, I would suggest a lightly moistened tissue inserted and turned to remove any residue that may remain inside, like a cleaning job.

Thanks to you, idizle, and everyone else who contributed.

    TT

Hi guys, new to posting on these forums,

Anyways I just had this problem with my 3GS today --> Not sure if it was the April showers today, or perhaps sweat from the gym (although have been going to the gym daily this week and this problem only happened today - I have a iphone/ipod sports arm strap).

Anway I restored my iphone twice (to no avail), read all the comments/suggestions and the twisted tissue into the headphone port a few times solved the problem for me! I can now hear my key clicks again!

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped out!

New to posting as well but thought I'd contribute here:

Got caught in the rain during an afternoon run, and I decided to keep running back and keep the phone in the semi protective arm band I had. When I got back the phone was sorta wet so I toweled it off and discovered the headphone error.

Tried the removing and inserting into headphone jack - no dice.

Tried the alarm/timer - no dice

Tried the tissue - no dice

Tried the hairdryer for 5 minutes - DICE!!!

Thanks for the help guys and girls;)

I had the phone in my hand while I was out running, it started to rain and probably some water found it's way into the earphone socket. I used my air compressor with a cleaning nozzle and blew gently into the socket for a few seconds, and after that phone was back to normal again.

I did the same, spilled a drink, but nothing worked for me until I took apart a ink pen poked around the headphone jack, this worked for me.

I tried all of them only one of them actually worked. Roll up a piece of tissue, stick it down into the headphone jack as far as you can, then take it out. It worked immediately for me.

First had headphone problem then saw that pot of fresh fruit had exploded in my bag. Looked into headphone jack and could see juice. Shook it out and quite a few drops shook out. It did not pour out, however. Shook vigorously. No impact on headphone issue. Tried tissue as above. Did not work. Then vigorously blew air into headphone jack using the air squeeze blower for my camera. Still no luck. Left with tissue in headphone jack for ten minutes and then the issue had cleared. Thought I would add my experience here as the advice seemed to have saved my device. Good luck if you're in the same situation.

I just had this problem on my iPhone 4S. I just deleted two apps that I had installed earlier today and that fixed the problem! So if you've recently installed an app, try removing it to see if it helps.

These forums are so great.  I solved my question because yours got solved.  I did it a little differently:

I just told Siri to set a countdown for 5 seconds.  Done!

(But it sounds like some people here had moisture in their headphone jack, so a physical solution like the tissue trick is what they needed.)

I've tried all of the things mentioned and have had no result. Obviously the phone rings and the alarm sounds because these htings happen through the speakers when headphones are plugged in, but it's all the other alert sounds/music etc that would normally go through the headphones if there were some plugged in, that do not play now. Hard volume buttons still show 'headphones'. My iPhone 5S only did this today so still in warranty I guess. My 4S did it after the warranty ran out so I guess I'm better off this time around.

Hmm... that is weird.  How are you doing the tissue trick?  Remember, this is in case anything got in that jack that could be closing the connection.  After that, then try one of the other software things mentioned like the alarm trick.

And then don't forget to reboot!

I was having the same issue with my iPhone 5c. It wouldn't play anything out loud except the ringer. It just kept saying there was headphones plugged in. I tried the twisted up tissue an. It worked IMMEDIATELY!! Thank you so much!

i was out in the snow and I dropped my phone, after many attempts at all of the ways the forum told me to, i tried fiddling around with the settings, and found that by turning the bouetooth off and on again, the speakers started to work again.
