Q: How to erase free space in partition?

Hey guys,

I've got a little problem here. I wanted to partition my hard disk to try out the new Yosemite. The Macintosh HD that you see in the picture is for Mavericks and Macintosh HD 2 is for Yosemite. However, there is a third part of Free Space. Now, I'd like to include that free space into Macintosh HD 2.

How do I do that?

Thank you,

Pietro

If everything is ok on Yosemite I'm just gonna get rid of Mavericks

Before you get rid of Mavericks, download Mavericks again from the App Store / Purchases tab and store the Install OS X Mavericks.app file on an external drive. In case you want to reinstall Mavericks, you will have the full installer file so you can create a USB thumb drive Mavericks installer.

Thank you. I know it's almost full, but after all is fixed I am going to delete Mavericks, so I will just have Yosemite with less than 80GB occupied on the entire disk ;-)

Good. You won't have to worry about CoreStorage unless you decide to turn on Filevault to encrypt your drive.

If your Macintosh HD 2 is your Yosemite install that you will want to use going forward, the following would be an easy way to clone it over to the Macintosh HD. The end result will be both partitions will be named Macintosh HD 2 but you would be able to delete the lower (2nd partition) and resize it in with the upper (1st partition).

Restart using the Option key and select the Yosemite Recovery HD (10.10.x).

Open Disk Utility and select the Macintosh HD 2 then click the Restore tab.

Make sure Macintosh HD 2 is in the Source field and click/drag the Macintosh HD to the Destination field.

Click the Restore button. This will erase the Macintosh HD and clone the Macintosh HD Yosemite and its Recovery HD (10.10.x) to Macintosh HD.

When the restore completes, both partitions will be labeled Macintosh HD 2.

    Exit Disk Utility

Select the Menu Bar's OS X Utilities item then Startup Drive and make the 1st  Macintosh HD 2 the startup drive so it boots into it.

Once at  your Desktop you can rename the bottom partition to some other name so you can distinguish which is which and so your Yosemite install is the 1st partition.

Will do, thank you. I need to keep Mavericks for now, though.

Thank you all (and especially keg55) for your help!
