Q: Yosemite nightmare

My MacBook Pro barely works at all since Yosemite. It takes minutes now to execute commands - it’s constantly ‘loading’ something, and every command is delayed. Volume up and down can take two minutes to show up on the screen. Typing anything (such as this) is a constant wait for the machine to catch up while the little wheel goes round and round. Programmes (Pages) take an eternity to load, then freeze or just blink out again. Any command can freeze the whole computer, so I’m constantly having to restart (which takes a *very* long time). Sound isn’t synchronised to picture on bluetooth, so my devices are useless. Yosemite basically, has made my computer unusable.

I have no expertise: can anyone explain how I can get it off again?

Thanks very much.

Hello LMM and welcome to Apple Support Communities,

It will help us diagnose your problem to know the exact model, size, year built, RAM installed and OS you're running

Do you have any install disks? Original or otherwise?  Any bootable USB installers?

    There's this:

You can reinstall the backup you made prior to installing Yosemite, or you can post an etrecheck report so we can help see why your particular Mac is not running Yosemite smoothly like many many millions of others.

    Hello Pete.

Thanks very much for your suggestion, and the Etrecheck report is below.

I’ve seen quite a lot online about problems the same as mine. Here’s a complete list of what’s been going wrong.

    1. Extreme slowness, as above. Selected programmes bounce up and down in the dock for minutes, then don’t launch: force quit takes forever to show, and then will show the programme as ‘not responding’. It will work fine for hours at a time (it’s working great now), but getting it to come on took a while. I read a suggested fix for this, involving resetting the SMC (?), by holding shift/ctrl/alt and then shutting down and opening again. This seemed to work, but then it started being slow again.

    2. It shuts itself down. Sometimes starting up is fine, sometimes it starts up with the CPU indicators on full and the temperature rising. It can take five to ten minutes to fully start up. Sometimes it won’t restart again at all for minutes or hours. When it restarts, the battery indicator shows 0%, no matter what it had been before. I’m not thrashing it: the most I ever do is stream TV and do text files. Usually the CPU indicators barely register.

    3. Programmes blink off: I mostly use Safari and Pages, and they just shut themselves down every now and again. It doesn’t seem  be working too hard: the CPU indicators show low activity. They can take forever to come back on again.

    4. DVDs won’t play. This is a problem many online users have had since Mavericks. I don’t play DVDs much, but when I found I wanted to, it just whirred and clunked like it usually does, then rejected it. I tried others, which I know had previously worked on this computer: the same. I tried VLC: no media found.

Thanks very much for your help. Much appreciated.

    Simon.

    Hi...!!

Get rid of the 2 Adware's (Geneio and Omnibar). Download AdwareMedic and run the software....http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php

Also, uninstall the unwanted 3rd party internet plugins. Remove the 3rd party preferences panes items like Filp4Mac WMV and Growl notification app.

You just need to upgrade your RAM to at least 8GB. I think that your mid 2009 macbook pro can handle max 8GB of RAM.

Dude, are you really expecting to run Yosemite with just 2 GB of RAM. You must be kidding man. The reason for extreme.. extreme.....system slow down is because of memory pressure i.e; more than 19 processes were killed due to memory pressure to avoid further slowdowns. (2 GB RAM...... very very mediocre specs....!!)

Just upgrade the RAM and get rid of Yosemite and downgrade the OS to Mountain lion as its a very stable OS. Do not worry about the security update as, its updated at regular intervals when needed. Yosemite is not yet ready to be used with low powered machines (which is in your case a mid 2009 Macbook). Also, Yosemite has got lots of issues which are yet to be rectified.

    Hope this helps.

    - Granel.

2GB RAM is enough to launch the operating system but not enough to run anything. Actually the last time a Mac ran well with just 2GB was with 10.6 (Snow Leopard). If you were running anything newer than 10.6 you must have been pretty patient. The 2009 MBP can be upgraded to 8GB and Yosemite performance will be quite good with that. 4GB won’t cut it without also upgrading your hard drive to an SSD. If you intend to keep the computer for any length of time consider getting 8GB RAM and an SSD. My 2009 MBP remains an amazing powerhouse with those upgrades.

As Grane said, you’ve got two pieces of adware that can be deleted with the simple use of the program he linked to. It is a program written by a highly trusted contributor to the ASC community.

    Thanks all. Very helpful.

Is upgrading the RAM something I can easily do myself?

Alternately, would it be a good idea to go back to the original 2009 OS (whatever that was)and use that instead of Mav/Yos? Would it still work now?

    Thanks again.

Go to Other World Computing and check out their support site to see instructions on upgrading RAM. Their prices for RAM are competitive (so is Crucial).

Hi dwb and the rest of the contributors. Thanks to all for your invaluable help.

I decided to bite the bullet and just restore from 2012 from Time Machine. Everything seems wonderful again. The only thing is re-learning the trackpad, which is now pre-whatever it was that reversed the direction you stroke in, so now you go the other way again. It’s possible there’s a more elegant way of putting that. Happy days.

    Thanks again.

Yahh, glad you woke up from your nightmare!

    " it

Not sure which OS you went back to but I'm in Mavericks (Staying here after seeing so many others stumble ahead. )

Go to System Preferences - Trackpad:

Select natural direction, that seems the most natural to me.

I wouldn’t recommend you to go back to OS X 10.5.7 “Leopard (The preinstalled OS X on your mid 2009 Macbook). There are no longer security updates for this particular OS X so its kind of a gamble to use Leopard. Also, modern apps won’t run properly on Leopard.

Just get the copy of mountain Lion from Apple store.. Excellent OS X for your mid 2009 Macbook pro....http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion

Yes, mid 2009 macbook RAM’s are user upgradable. Buy it from OWC. Excellent and trustworthy seller. No problems ever with RAM compatibility.... Hope this helps....

I rather randomly selected the date I returned to on Time Machine, hence I got 10.6.8. Would you know roughly when Mountain Lion was released?

Mountain Lion was released on July 25, 2012.

Don’t worry.... Mountain Lion is compatible with your mid 2009 macbook. Just buy the digital copy of Mountain Lion from the Apple website link provided by me. You can select the country from bottom right side if you wish to buy it from outside the US.

Ummm, yah, the recovery function was supported starting with Lion OS 10.7:

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

So it should work again if you can upgrade to Lion.

It might be possible to upgrade to Mountain Lion:
