Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Yep. The days of Apple OSX reliability are over

    AND TRUST

I don't trust Apple after this.

I understand they try to figure it out...

BUT a brand new MBA shipped with Yosemite (MBA 11", early 2014 with 8GB RAM and a Core i7). BT never worked properly together with Wi-Fi since getting out of the packaging.

I mean seriously... This is not some kind of a vacuum cleaner, or hairdryer or something else...This is supposed to be top notch...Tested and supposedly "just works"...

I could understand (but still not justify) if older hardware had issues...But it's the currently available latest model...

Which in 2015 unable to serve bluetooth and Wi-Fi (no, not the fancy new AC standard, but 802.11 N) at the same time...Which by the way my Dell with windows XP could do in 2006 (I agree...it was wireless G at best in those days).

And I can also confirm that the upstream data traffic does not seem to be effected by BT activation/connection, but only the downstream.

UDP packets are seemingly also not effected (ping, etc...) by the degradation of the downstream.

Edit: I've checked and at the time of "stalling" the TxRate and the MCS index (I'm an IT engineer by trade) remain the same, so physically the connection remains unchanged...Somehow this whole thing reminds me of "traffic shaping" or QoS getting out of control when the BT gets activated...

Hello I have a MacBook 15" Retina Late 2013. Indeed on a 2.4 Ghz network the bluetooth and wifi don`t get along too well. I had a lot of issues when using both my magic mouse and logitech keyboard while connected through wifi. Without any bluetooth device connected the wifi was flawless. I solved all that problems and now I am getting a solid wifi connection (340-350 mbps) with all the bluetooth devices connected by switching to a 5Ghz network. Of course I had to change my old router with an Asus AC56U which is a very good product.

Hi , i bought the Late 2013 27" iMac two month ago and never had any problems with WiFi.

Since I updated to 10.10.2 I keep getting major problems with the connection: Slow connection, Disconnects etc.

Seems like the update fixed the WiFi-Problems for some of those who had them before but also cause these problems for people who never had any problems with WiFi.

Hopefully they'll release another update to fix this.

For people who never had wifi problems before and now have, and are looking for a temporary fix, check if this works for you. It worked for me.

    Slow WiFi issues after 10.10.2

    Cheers

I upgraded two systems (MacBook Pro 15" Retina Early 2013 and MacBook Air 13" Mid 2011) to the released 10.10.2 and am having no wireless issues at all.  None.  Period.  In fact the Air is unattended at home right now running NoSleep and I am using Screen Sharing through VPN to my home network and it's flawless.

With the Pro however I had previously replaced the /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext with one from Mavericks, which had downgraded the Broadcom firmware to a 5.x version, and after the upgrade it did not re-update to 7.x.  So I took a Time Machine backup and restored from that and it resulted in the latest firmware version showing properly.  The Air only ever showed 5.x firmware, I suppose because it's an older card that 7.x does not apply to.

I have tried connecting to Airport Extreme, Cisco and Juniper wireless routers/APs (at work my Pro would continuously drop when connected to Cisco APs) but now everything is completely rock solid and I have had no drops at all since upgrading.

Note that most of my connections seem to prefer 5GHz 802.11a/n (I don't have ac), so it's possible the bulk of the issues being seen are specific to 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n.  The 2.4GHz spectrum is always problematic as it is shared with other devices like BlueTooth, etc, as well as being effected by Microwave ovens and older cordless phones, etc.

As i wrote earlier, things are a bit quicker/better again on my system after the update.

I had big wifi problems for some time before the update though.

My router is an old TP-Link that only sends on 2.4 GHz 11bgn mixed.

Turned out that the performance was not linked to my MBP but to the neighborhood - too many on the same frequency.

Switched from channel 11 to 3 and had no complaints from anyone in my family since. We have up to eight systems online at once.

Has anyone who has the problems tried this?

Looks like 10.10.2 didn't fix Wi-fi problems either on my Macbook pro (late 2013)

Airdrop of a movie file of size 80 MB takes just a few seconds between iPad air and iMac (late 2012)

But when I use Macbook with either of these devices, it takes ages- 10-15 minutes!

I tested all of these sitting next to the Wi-fi router.

Is the wi-fi logic board on Macbook pro (late 2013) defective ?

As I mentioned in a previous post the Wifi problem disappeared from my early 2014 macbook air when I did a clean-install (http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/18/clean-install-os-x-yosemite/) of Yosemite (10.10.01).

Unfortunately the problems now appear again. Only thing that happened in the mean time is that I closed the lid on the brick yesterday evening and opened it again this evening.

Strangely I get the same results as yesterday (with the possible exception of ping), when testing my internet speeds :-s

Tried to switch off bluetooth to no effect.

I wonder how many $ millions worth of equipment has been effectively destroyed due to this issue?

    Huss417,

I also spent a couple of hours on the phone with an Apple tech a couple of months ago. I know they're trying to figure it out (after all, they're releasing updates, each of which is supposed to fix the network issue which they never officially confirmed, existed,) but it doesn't seem like they're getting closer to a solution, several months into this mess. On other message boards, a lot of people claim they never had the issues so many of us have, and they still seem to be fine, on 10.10.2. It looks like those of us who have been having these problems from the get go, are the ones for whom none of the updates have made anything better, really.

All we can do is wait and hope, I guess... *sigh*

    Nils2u,

I did. I actually configured the router the exact same way you did, a while ago (from channel 11 to 3, the latter of which is supposed to be the least congested channel in my spot,) and it fixed exactly nothing. It's all on 2.4 GHz since my MBP has refused to connect to 5 GHz since I installed Yosemite. (Again, I have never had BT turned on since October.)

Same here. Latest MacBook Pro Retina and BT home hub 5 with bluetooth cause wifi to stall - still after 10.10.2.....surely not rocket science to fix this?

Meanwhile I'm quite upset about that all.

How long can it take to fix a normal Wifi issues?

    Just speechless.............

I also got a wifi problem after update to 10.10.2. It takes almost a minute before my macbook pro can connect to my Airport Extreme.
