Q: Diagnostics of Mac Hardware

I read that holding down "D" while booting your Mac will launch the Apple Mac Diagnostics system however i've tried it on three different Macs:

  • 15" MacBook Pro Late 2008
  • 13" MacBook Pro Late 2011
  • 27" iMac Late 2013

With no results. It just carries on booting into the OS X.

The machine with the issues is the 13" MacBook Pro but i though maybe because i reinstalled it with OS X 10.9.5 recently it may have caused the issue of not launching the Diagnostics but the iMac hasn't been reinstalled and its not doing it either.

If anyone knows whats up with this thing i'll be grateful to hear what they think.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

The diagnostics was not available for older hardware. Did you try the Apple Hardware Test?

Important: If your Mac was introduced before June 2013, you will use Apple Hardware Test

rather than Apple Diagnostics. See Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test for instructions.

•Using Apple Diagnostics - Apple Support

Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion and later support the use of Apple

Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version

of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.

You may need to try & use Apple Recovery and OS X Utilities, on a newer Mac for other testing

or repairs, or disk utility services, if the Hardware Test and Diagnostic tests are inconclusive.

Also consider a full diagnostic test done by a trained AASP specialist or a genius staff person.

    Good luck & happy computing!
