Q: macbook pro windows wont boot from second disk

I have run bootcamp and it has installed windows on a second disk, took out the DVD drive, in order to get it to install I removed the SSD from the primary bay and windows installed fine.

     Rebooted with no issues.

Placed the SSD back in the primary bay and now it will not boot to windows, but boots straight to OS X but does not see bootcamp in start up disk.

If I press option on start up i have the option of windows but just get a blank screen.

If I remove the SSD again it will boot to windows with no problems.

I had previously swapped the HDD and SSD and install windows then swapped them but but that did not work either.

Macbook Pro 9,2 Boot Rom and SMC version upto date. running OS X 10.10.1 bootcamp is the latest version.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Can you try System Preferences -> Startup Disk -> select Bootcamp -> Restart?

Can you post the output of the following command?

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk1s3 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

This will display the first block of the NTFS header.

With both disks in place, can you reset SMC and PRAM? See Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs - Apple Support for reference.

After doing some more research I've found one or two things out and was wondering if I could get some clarification.

    1. Boot camp is individual to each product line. e.g. boot camp will detect that its running on a macbook air vs a mac pro?

    2. based on the above it has certain expectations. e.g. that a macbook pro has a disc drive.

    3. based on the two above when boot camp runs on a macbook pro with a second drive instead of an optical drive it freaks out and wont boot.

If my assumptions are correct does that mean that if i created a boot camp installer on an air and used it in my macbook pro that it would ignore the second drive?

I was also thinking if I made a small windows drive on my SSD and then copied it to the secondary drive would that work?

Any assistance or information would be very much appreciated

Yes. It uses the Mac's Model Identifier. You can view it in About This Mac -> (More Info) -> System Report -> Hardware section.

    2. based on the above it has certain expectations. e.g. that a macbook pro has a disc drive.

    Correct.

    3. based on the two above when boot camp runs on a macbook pro with a second drive instead of an optical drive it freaks out and wont boot.

The creation of a USB is independent of the currently available hardware, it is based on Model Identifier. You can create a USB using an ISO or a physical DVD (on certain specific models - for example a 2012 MBP).

No, that is incorrect. The available hardware is discovered at run time. You also need to consider the fact that while building a USB on an MBA, BCA uses the Model Identifier to download BC drivers from Apple servers, which may not be valid for a MBP. For example, you cannot take a USB built on a 2014 MBA and use it on a 2009 MBP.

Please see Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems - Apple Support for a matrix of BC drivers for specific Mac year/model combinations.
