Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

For what it's worth, one more Apple customer feeling screwed....

Macbook Pro early 2011 (8,2) with the graphics failure issue.

Had it once, got it repaired under warranty, now the same problem on the new board (which is out of warranty now).

First it corrupted, then it won't boot. Unusable computer. Recall time!

Since this is such an important tool for you what have you done in the last six months to solve this problem?

You certainly didn't just sit there and watch the problem get worse now did you?

Besides that posting your problem at the bottom of this very long thread is certainly not the way to get your problem noticed. It almost appears that you really not interested in getting a solution to your problem.

I think this is a very uncalled for reply and serves no purpose at all.

    Hi all,

I was following this thread for a while but haven't caaught up on it in the last month. My MBP15 dicrete carrd died in June. I paid A$700 to get it "fixed". So then it died again in July and again in October - both times the logic board was replaced at Apple's expense. In October I asked wether I could get the A$700 off the price of a replacement newer model refurb. Apple said no - they would only do a deal on a brand new one. Thankfully I turned that offer down. Of course, my replacement logic board failed again - just last week. Apple replaced it with a brand new top-of-the-line (base model without any CTO options) 15" rMBP. I've been pretty ****** of with Apple over the last 6 months but they've finally come through for me. I hope it works out for everyone else out there with failing 2011 MBPs.

Could people please report back what the temperatures of their MBP GPU's under load are ? As I said, I am getting

    +-90°C (190°F) while running GpuTest.

Is this a normal operating temperature ?

On a rMBP11,3, running Heaven it easily goes up to 85º C here (maybe higher, if run for longer periods - edit: I'm not with my MBP8,2).

Is this a normal operating temperature ? Techs, please chime in here ! Thank's

It's a normal temperature on macbooks.

    Very poor thermal design.

Curious what models will start failing this/next year....

No, THIS is from Mountain Lion, and information was "tested" by looking at my System Preferences or I wouldn't have posted such.

Your screen shot is from Mavericks/Yosemite.

    A Dios!

Then you have an additional problem to deal with, that is not the correct screen for a dual video card MBP. (It looks like an iMac)

From what specific Mac was that image taken from?  Does that Mac have a a discrete GPU or just an integrated one?  My samples were from a 17" 2011 MBP that has a discrete GPU.  I suspect that yours does not!  Again I stand by my original statement that you in essence have not done all your homework.

Your screen shot is from Mavericks/Yosemite.

If my sample were from Mavericks and Yosemite, they would look like this:

    Yosemite:

    Mavericks:

    Screen Shot 2015-01-31 at 5.45.51 AM.png

Do you notice that the four images I have posted are ALL different?  I suggest that you look at them carefully, especially the one for Yosemite which has a significantly different look.

YOUR ASSERTION THAT I POSTED INCORRECT INFORMATION I TAKE ISSUE WITH!

    Ciao.

Jimoase, I think that if the difference in OSX System Prefs is indeed machine specific, all that needs to be said is that.
I never noticed the check box on my MBPro 2.0 (15-inch, early 2011), but it's not something highly memorable.

Now that my MBP only boots to gray screen and never to login screen, I can't check System Prefs, so I'll take your word for it.
Mea culpa for thinking that a version of OSX was visibly the same regardless of machine type.

I thought differences were only due to different versions of OSX.

No, just didn't know that OSX might visibly be different on MBP than on another MAC. But now I do thanks to jimoase, and no thanks to you.
You're the one who "makes things up", like this forum thread not being about MBPros early '11 only, even though original post was about MBPro '11 which is why (duh?) the thread is titled "2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card".

This thread contains complaints about MacBook Pros from 2008 to 2011, MacBooks from 2008 to 2010, iMacs (2011) and a mini.

Who are you to say that their complaints are somehow 'invisible'

And stop posting incorrect information and then insisting that everyone else is wrong, your house is already glass.
