Q: Your bootable USB drive could not be created

I've read all the previous threads about this problem.  I am using Yosemite 10.10.2 and have created an iso file from a MS WIndows 7 Ultimate SP1 X64  DVD I bought from Amazon.  I have followed the instructions for Boot Camp found in the pdf file from Apple and the Boot Camp Help file.  I have successfully created two iso files since I was not sure the first one was a good image, although it checked out using Get Info.  What do I need to do to get Boot Camp Assistant to work?

Any ideas are welcome.  Thanks

What year/model is your Mac? Does your Mac have a built-in Optical drive? Are you running into any problems with Bootcamp Assistant?

This iMac is a 27 inch late 2013 desktop.  No optical drive but I have a Super Drive connected via USB.

The Bootcamp Assistant runs fine for me.

I am wondering since my ISO file size is almost the same size as my 16BG USB drive if I should get a larger USB drive and try that?

    Thanks for the rapid response.

    Cheers

DVD Single-sided Dual-Layer media (SS-DL) has a maximum size of 8+ GB. How do you have a larger DVD (from which your ISO was created)?

    Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD#Capacity

    I have no idea why.

Here is the info on my SuperDrive with no disc inserted:

    HL-DT-ST DVDRW  GX30N:

      Firmware Revision: RP09

      Interconnect: USB

Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)

      Cache: 1536 KB

      Reads DVD: Yes

      CD-Write: -R, -RW

      DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

      Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose File > Refresh Information

And here is the same info with the Windows DVD inserted:

    HL-DT-ST DVDRW  GX30N:

      Firmware Revision: RP09

      Interconnect: USB

Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)

      Cache: 1536 KB

      Reads DVD: Yes

      CD-Write: -R, -RW

      DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

      Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

      Media:

      Type: DVD-ROM

      Blank: No

      Erasable: No

      Overwritable: No

      Appendable: No

And this is the Get Info Capacity & Available numbers from the Windows DVD:

    Capacity: 3.32 GB

    Available: 17.8 MB

So I can only conclude that the process used by the Disk Utility to create the ISO file used the files on the DVD to build an ISO file that is much larger than the sum of the parts of the files on the DVD.

    ???

That is the resource I used twice to create the ISO image.  I have two ISO images with different names.  Using either one fails at Step 15. and results in the message used as the subject of this thread.

Nothing I have found in searching the internet with "Your bootable USB drive could not be created" has been helpful in solving this problem.

Does it successfully download BC drivers from Apple servers, before failing?

Not that I can tell, since the error message appears about 1 second after I click on Continue.

Can you right click on the ISO and click on Get Info?

When I Get Info on both of the ISO files I have created I get identical numbers.

    Kind:  ISO Disk Image

Size: 15,927345,152 bytes (15.93 GB on disk)

The DVD is 3.32 GB. The BC Drivers (if directly downloaded) from Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5640 are about 926MB.

Can you run a Get Info on the USB and post a Finder screen shot of the USB file system expanded?

On a 16GB USB with 14+ GB free, it seems you only have the BC drivers on it. Run BCA, and create the USB installer (ISO+BC Drivers). If it fails due to disk space issues, it will notify you. The ISO is not put on the USB as an image, but files are copied from inside the ISO to the USB. Test it and post back with any errors.

I just repeated that process - twice, once for each ISO file I have created.  Still got the same error message.

Here is the text displayed below the error message:

"Boot Camp only supports Windows 7 or later installation on this platform. Please use an ISO file for Windows 7 or later installation."

Since I am using Windows 7 to create the ISO file I have no idea why I should have this problem?

I have to run some errands so will be gone for several hours.  Thanks for all your help.
