Q: Bootcamp won't mount or boot.

I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5 on a late 2011 Macbook Pro. My bootcamp partition has been unable to mount or boot and I'm not sure how to repair it.

diskutil list

/dev/disk0

   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.1 GB   disk0

   1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk0s1

   2:                  Apple_HFS Deathbook               335.2 GB   disk0s2

   3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3

4:       Microsoft Basic Data Windeath                161.1 GB   disk0s4

When I type diskutil cs list into terminal I get No CoreStorage logical volume groups found.

The problem occurred when I installed Yosemite, but was hoping it would fix itself when I reverted back to Mavericks. I've tried to repair the system using a windows recovery disk and Bootrec.exe commands but still have not been able to mount or boot into the drive.

There is a gap between GPT3 and GPT4 (of about 2.7GB).

Can you post the output of

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

This will show your current NTFS header, if it exists.

You have a non-Standard MBR (by Bootcamp standard configurations), but it is still a valid one. You have a valid NTFS header.

    1. Do you see the Bootcamp volume in Finder?

    2. Do you see files inside the Bootcamp Volume?

    3. Do you see Bootcamp as a selection in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

    4. Do you have any third-party NTFS software - like Tuxera, Paragon, NTFS-3g (or its free variants)?

The Bootcamp volume won't mount, so

    1. I do not see it in finder

    2. I cannot access any files from the volue

    3. It is not listed in the startup disks under system preferences

    4. I do have NTFS - 3 installed

Apple will not allow a third-party NTFS driver to be shown in System Preferences -> Startup Disk. Please remove all third-party NTFS software, reboot, and test again.

Okay I uninstalled NTFS - 3, but this did not change the behavior of my bootcamp volume. It still doesn't appear in finder, is not listed in Startup Disk or bootable disks, and will not mount in disk utility.

I installed NTFS - 3 after the problem occurred, thinking it might help OSX read the disk.

Did you reboot after the NTFS-3 uninstall?

Yes, I also checked to see if Bootcamp appeared in the boot screen by holding option, it did not.

Do you see an entry for the Bootcamp partition in Disk Utility? If yes, click on it. It should look similar to the following.

Can you click on Mount and see if Windeath will mount? Please post any error messages you see or check in Console logs.

Was the Windows partition resized at any point in time between the original installation and the Yosemite Upgrade?
