Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

I have a late 2013, macbook pro retina. I had wifi problems as soon as Yosemite was installed. I got so fed up that I did a fresh install which seemed to improve performance, but it was still not at the level it had been running Mavericks. 10.10.1 made no difference, 10.10.2 has made it worse. The macbook does not connect to the local network after sleep. Switching wifi on then off fixes that, but then connectivity is either very slow or doesn't connect. I question whether I should do the next update. It surely cannot make it worse. I wonder if I will be able to actually get and download any update over wifi, but then how else can it be done - a rhetorical question.

The issues with Yosemite are well documented. Apple are silent. I am unable to work properly or effectively since the Yosemite install. For the first time in over 10 years, I am about to become a non-Apple customer. It is simply not good enough for any company, and certainly not for Apple with it's huge resources garnered from it's commercial success.

    Very disappointed. Very annoyed.

    • This video shows how my connection drops to 1/2 of the maximum speed when bluetooth is connected.
    • When this happens, I'm happy because I still can use internet.
    • When my connection starts giving me problems, then the speed drops to 0, but I didn't get it in a video.
    • So, if you have problems, try disconnecting bluetooth.

    UPDATE / slight recap

Does my experience make sense to anybody (I am only an IT wannabe I have mid 2010 MBP 7.1, using Brit Tel HomeHub5a Jan 17 firmware 4.7.5.1.83.8.204

I upgraded to 10.10.2 from ...106a on Feb 1st nervously as I had had quite good wifi- connections for a few days on the seed apart from a 5ghz hit n miss connection which seemed to be resolved after a router switch off/on

Prior to switch had a wifi connection drop and a new Wifi Diag report item: conflicting security type but according to system info there was no difference. And then resumption of failed connection to 5ghz - invalid password error.

So after 10.10.2 download I was able to connect to 5ghz after password request; I also amended 5ghz SSID to make it more distinguishable from 3ghz, and promoted it to top of preferred list and for 1st time ever I think I was auto reconnected to 5 after wifi switch off/on

I then pushed my luck to try to improve MPS and changed wireless interface to a/n/ac from a/n

This didn't seem so stable so this morning I reversed that change. Invalid password nonsense reappeared. I COULD reconnect but only briefly WITHOUT password request when i had Systems Preferences open....

I also noticed that 5ghz was using self assigned IP. Tried to resolve that by switching to manually assigned IP address - same as ethernet.. Various attempts. Keychain access kept crashing when I tried to delete from system.

Eventually after reset of router it worked - IP address was no longer self assigned, (and wasn't the same as ethernet..? same as 2.4 ghz)

Has been happily connected for 120 mins. BUT NOW Safari cannot connect me to home hub when connected to internet thru wireless - have to use ethernet? Is this just something I hadn't noticed before or is it a new glitch?  This persisted after switch off of Mac

As I have had no BT problems whatsoever and use BT keyboard and mouse 100% of time is it worthwhile trying to understand how our machine settings may differ?

Hello PFJ30 and to all. I had no issue with Yosemite 10.10.2. I carried my Network settings from Mavericks. Is anyone willing to test? These settings work for my Mac Mini and MacBook Pro. I am providing this as simply a Test you may try because I am wanting to see it help someone.

First thing is to disable or get rid of Adaware, Antivirus, Mackeeper and all those things that will literally break or bog down your Mac and Apps. So here goes.

    For testing Set up Router

5 GHz SSID:Test-5GHz WPA2/WPA Personal make the Passphrase easy to remember

2.4 GHz SSID:  Test-2.4GHz WPA2/WPA Personal this Passphrase different

    Turn off Guest Access

During these applied settings Router may Reboot just let it do. When done shutdown computer and turn off all Wifi (or devices) in your network.

Unplug Router wait 2 minutes then plug in. Give it approx. 2 minutes to come on line.

Power up The Mac NO ETHERNET this is important!

Go to System Prefs>Network highlight Wi-Fi click Advanced use the minus button to rid Preferred Networks. All gone. Click Ok and Apply.

Now System Prefs>Sharing Computer Name leave as is. Click Edit now give the name Test-MyComputer.local then click Ok

Restart computer so the change takes effect.

Now connect to your newly created Test-5GHz Wi-Fi

Go to System Prefs>Network click Advanced now click the WINS tab.

You should see your newly created NetBios name. Change WORKGROUP to HOMEGROUP click Ok and Apply. Shutdown your Mac. Wait approx. 1 minute.

Power up. If all goes well it should connect right up upon Desktop load. Open Safari and clear all history. Exit Safari. Go to the Apple at Menu Bar click Recent Items and clear.

Reopen Safari and give it a go.

Please note that if this does work to change all of the Test settings to something of your own choosing following these steps.

If this works, feel free to share it with everyone!!!

    Cheers!

You are right this is aleatory ...

I thought it had solved the problem but no ... nothing with bluetooth.

It takes a long time to catch the wifi network at startup. and i am on 2,4Ghz  with WPA2-PSK/AES ! SSID is hidden ..

    Once connected it's ok

Which takes a long time I have noticed is obtaining ipv6 parameters in addition to ipv4 (dns, router adress ...)

Yes, it's just the same for me. With Bluetooth on, my download speed is really low, and it speeds up as soon as I switch Bluetooth off. Strange.

I need Bluetooth for my keyboard, so I just have to put up with slow mbps, even though I'm paying shedloads to my ISP for faster speeds... BTW, upload speeds are excellent, it's just that I don't need to upload anything...

    C'est la vie.

It did not solve my issue.

I always experience disconnects every 10-15 seconds from my Lumia 720 used as hotspot.

Nothing changed for me upgrading to 10.10.2!

All started after the upgrade from Maverick to Yosemite.

The interesting thing is that instead wifi connection is stable with my Android phone used as hotspot.

Yesterday I solved all issues... By doing a clean install of Mavericks. It runs like a dream.

I have the same problem...it is so extremely infuriating. Wifi dropping off constantly!....interestingly I cannot hold bluetooth either..as I try to send a file from my phone (once connected) the wifi craps out...I need a stable wifi..I cannot continue like this...it's a serious issue Apple need to address.

Can't remember where I read but... SSID hidden = not good, IPv6  ditto, and WPA/2 I think is supposed to be just Personal security level - I think but waddyIknow?!

I have tried all the tricks...nothing works...I alternate between restarting 12+ times a day to the router getting the same treatment...my phone still picks up wifi so I know it is my mac. So sad.
