Q: Netflix display error with Safari 8/OSX 10.10 Yosemite

I am having an issue with playing Netflix content through Safari since upgrading to Yosemite. Specifically, Netflix will start to play the content and then display an error after a few seconds. The error reads "Whoops, something went wrong... display error. There appears to be a display problem. Please ensure your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirror using airplay."

My monitor is HDCP compliant (HP ZR30W) and it's the only monitor connected to my 2014 MacPro. I presume this is an issue with the latest version of Safari and all the next extensions Apple added to support Netflix streaming without the Silverlight plugin.

Anyone have a solution for this or seen the same problem? The new Safari is crazy-fast and I'd prefer to use it with Netflix. Hate bailing to Chrome.

Firefox worked, but the playback rate was slow.

The only thing that worked for me was using Chrome.

I had to update the Widevine CDM plugin, but that was very easy.

I'm having the same issue with a late 2011 MB Pro. I double and triple checked to make sure it was HD compliant, and I refuse to downgrade to Chrome, because both Apple and Netflix touted the HTML5 upgrade. I have nothing extra plugged in to the computer except for a pair of headphones and a thumb drive with pdf and word files. It's incredibly irritating to have a really good show get interrupted fifteen times (I'm not exaggerating) with various error codes (this is not the only one) because they couldn't get the software together before they released it. I suggest putting in feedback to Apple and Netflix, so that they're aware there's an issue.

I just use Chrome for Netflix.

I use Firefox for everything else.

    I'm pretty sure it's using HTML5 because (I don't think) I have Silverlight installed.

The playback using Chrome has been fine, no issues at all.

Chrome and Firefox tend to slow down my Macbook to glacial speeds, and I hate having a million windows open at once and toggling back and forth. I'm a simplistic person and just want the thing to work. I don't want a workaround. I really wish the two companies would stop blaming each other and just fix the issue.

For me at least this ... appears ... to have been fixed.  Netflix is running on both monitors (iMac and HP monitor connected via Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter).  Not sure if anything was changed on Safari or maybe something Netflix did internally.

They haven't, because I've still been getting the error codes as of yesterday. And I'm still not using an external monitor, which is infinitely more frustrating, because when I call Netflix, they ask me to unplug my headphones, which I know is not the issue. I do it, just to humor them, but geez.

I'm having the exact same problems but whatever is going on has spread to all my browsers. Here's the rundown....

I recently updated my Macbook Air to Yosemite. Afterwards, I plugged my mac into the Samsung home entertainment system (w/ projector and surround sound) using an HDMI cable and Mini Displayport to HDMI Adapter. Everything worked and we streamed HBO Go and Netflix. The next day I plug my laptop back in and get the error message ('Whoops something went wrong') from Netflix. Thinking it was the cables we tried it on a friend's Macbook Pro and everything worked. We checked out all the configurations on the home theater system--everything worked with her laptop and everything passed on the system check. Plugged my laptop in and get the same Netflix error.

I've tried it in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. None of them will stream Netflix while connected via HDMI cable. To make matters worse, HBO, YouTube, and Amazon Prime have stopped working when connected by HDMI cable. Unplug the cable and the video will play on the laptop screen; plug the hdmi cable back in and the audio cuts out (only for Amazon Prime) or the video playback stops and won't resume. Please help! I'm running out of options to try and fix it.

I was able to solve this by going to Safari > Preferences > Security > Website Settings (plugins) > Silverlight and selecting Allow Always, then Run in Unsafe Mode - the restart safari and play Netflix and it works. Thank goodness there is a software workaround for this silly restriction.

I have a Mac Mini 2012 model and have dual monitor setup (24" AOC LCD via DVI to mini display port and 27"SAMSUNG LED via HDMI) and was having HDMI problems (SAMSUNG failing to wake after sleep, colorful snow) so I did what others suggested and got a VGA to mini display port for my SAMSUNG and connected my AOC DVI to HDMI and my HDMI problems went away, but . . .

I have problems playing NETFLIX and get the error to check if my display is HDCP compliant -- both are.

My work around is to watch NETFLIX on Google Chrome-- which works wonderfully.

I hope Apple addresses and fix the HDCP NETFLIX issue with Safari because both my displays are HDCP compliant but won't work if I use my SAMSUNG with VGA to mini display port instead of direct HDMI.

    This works 100%!

    It's a solution from a MacRumors posting, from Sabretooth78:

" A way around this that I found works for me (so far, YMMV) is to enable the "Develop" menu in Safari and from that menu, change your User Agent to a prior version of Safari."

No repercussions, just make sure that the tab that is "running" on the older version is the one that's running Netflix. When you quit out of that tab or add a new tab; the new tab reverts to the current version of Safari.

Nope, did not work for me.

    I have a 5KiMac, 4GHz i7, 32GB 1600 Mhz DDR3, AMD radeon R9 M295X 4096 graphics and 3TB HD.

But, I kept the old 20 inch Cinema as my 2nd monitor.  Works perfectly for everything else except Netflix.

Netflix works perfectly if I unplug the Cinema mon.

I really don't like to and don't trust all the plugging and unplugging of the monitor.

A system is only as powerful as it's weakest link and the USB sockets, the monitor sockets and the audio sockets are  probably the cheapest parts made in China.

I wish they will bring all the jobs home asap.  I miss all those things made in USA with almost life time guarantee back in the 60's and 70's.

But then, I am too old to be bitchy.  I don't exactly watch Netflix on the iMac.  I just use it to check for movies which I watch on the TV anyway.

I bugs me when a tool is not working as I paid for it to.

The Develop fix worked for me. Running Safari 8.0.3 on Yosemite (10.10.2) on a 2014 15" MBP Retina. But it's a kludge. The problem should be fixed. Now if somebody can just figure out where the problem is...

Using a different browser or changing Safari's user agent is not a solution but a workaround that uses old flash instead of the more efficient (CPU and memory) and better quality (1080p) html5 version. This problem needs to be fixed by Apple and I'm not even sure it's in Safari but maybe something related to the Display driver. Until then, I'm using Chrome just to watch Netflix.

Agreed. And allow me to join the party here. I have a MacBook Air (13 inch, mid 2011). It doesn't have, and has never at any time had, an external monitor connected. There are no devices attached of any kind, in fact. I don't think I've even ever done AirPlay mirroring, but if I ever have, I'm certainly not now, and haven't since the Yosemite upgrade. I'm pretty **** sure the built in display is HDCP compliant. I have no other A/V apps running.

That's about the purest setup you can envision, so I'm confident in saying this is a bug, pure and simple. There's absolutely nothing about this computer that could have an HDCP issue, even in the past. Like others, this drives me up one wall and down the other. It needs to be fixed.
