4 GB is a modest configuration and the minimum practical amount for acceptable performance. If you actually need to use all those Internet Plug-ins you should purchase and install more memory.

Google products run poorly on Macs regardless of memory or other finite system resources. Even a robustly configured Mac is going to be hobbled by Chrome's plethora of system modifications, daemons, "helpers" and so forth. Smart Mac users don't use Chrome, Google Drive, Google Talk, Google anything. Use Google's products as you wish, but by doing so you must accept the detrimental effect on your Mac's performance, as well as forfeit an unknown amount of what you may consider private details of your personal life.

I recommend you use a browser written by those who know how to develop efficient OS X apps. Google is not one of them.

    John,

When the OP follows that Apple RAM link, he will find Apple does not have RAM available for his model..

    floatingboy,

If you give us an idea of where you are located, perhaps we can recommend a known-good RAM vendor. for your model.

from your report: I agree with John's assessment. One other thing to check is DivX. Historically, outdated version have caused some issues. Make sure it is fully updated.

Other than Apple there are only two vendors with which I have personal experience and can recommend: Crucial and OWC. People have reported problems with many other brands, yet Crucial and OWC's prices are as good as any you are likely to find. You may also find brands recommended by other ASC contributors but I have no experience with them.

Go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options.

Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales.

First of all, thank you both for taking the time to answer.  I have trashed a lot of the plug-ins, leaving only:

    Default Browser: Version: 600 - SDK 10.10

    FlashPlayer-10.6: Version: 16.0.0.296 - SDK 10.6

    Flash Player: Version: 16.0.0.296 - SDK 10.6

    QuickTime Plugin: Version: 7.7.3

    AdobePDFViewer: Version: 10.1.13

    Silverlight: Version: 5.1.30514.0 - SDK 10.6

I'm not sure that I need the QuickTime one though.  As far as the RAM upgrade goes, I'm definitely on board.  I remember in past machines I've had to upgrade in equivalent pairs, But I see on OWC that they offer non-matched pairs.  If so, could I theoretically leave one of my 2GB sticks in and get an 8GB one beside it?

You could. I think you'll see a definite performance with just 8 GB though.

Don't delete QuickTime Player. You are likely to need that more than you would Adobe Flash Player.

Many websites no longer use Flash for video. If you delete anything, start with that. You may not require Silverlight either. Netflix no longer requires Microsoft Silverlight unless your hardware does not have the graphics capability it uses in lieu of software. I am nearly certain no 13 inch Macs have that hardware though, so you might need Silverlight.

Netflix movies that would cause Macs to deplete battery life quickly while running Silverlight will no longer do that after Silverlight is uninstalled. Amazon still requires Silverlight though. You certainly don't need Adobe software to view PDFs.

The inefficient and resource-demanding software to be avoided is anything from Adobe, Google, or Microsoft. None of those companies have expressed any interest in developing efficient OS X code, or iOS code for that matter. They certainly haven't demonstrated any ability to do so.

Thanks again for replying.  I do need Silverlight, so that will stay.  I just now completed the update to 10.10.2 and I can already see a big difference.  Safari was hanging up constantly, and now it seems much snappier.  Maybe I can put off the memory upgrade and SSD hybrid drive for a little longer...   I did also just remove the Adobe plugins right before I upgraded the OS.  I wonder how much of the difference that is responsible for.

Almost the same here, I know and have dealt with both, but I recommend OWC only.

The degree to which Adobe Flash or other Adobe plugins influence performance, I can't say for certain since I got rid of all their software some time ago. From the security alerts I see though, Flash vulnerabilities appear almost weekly. Keeping Adobe Flash Player up to date began to take almost as much effort as maintaining a Windows PC, and I don't have time for that. If you don't absolutely require Flash it's best to keep it off your Mac.

I came across an embedded video on Facebook that wouldn't play without the FlashPlayer plugin.  I reinstalled it, half just to see how it would affect performance.  So far so good.  Things are still much better after the OS update.  They must have fixed a few things!

Count Facebook as another target for scam artists, to be avoided as the fetid open human waste pit it resembles. Enter at your peril.
