Q: Upgrading old purchases to iTunes Plus?

Any suggestions on how to upgrade old purchases to iTunes Plus with 256k encoding? I tried deleting an album from my library and downloading it but it still showed up as 128k files.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Thanks. Do you know if this works only if I subscribe to iTunes Match (which I do not)? I followed those same steps before I posted my question but still ended up with 128K files. If this method only works for iTunes Match subscribers, are there any other alternatives?

It's only for iTunes Match subscribers.
