Q: Problem with video audio sync using Bluetooth headphones

I have recently bought a pair of beats studio wireless headphones but when using my ipad there are sync issues with video and audio. Many apps have the problem but sky go seems to be the worst followed by YouTube. Apple video is not too bad but not perfect.

iPad, iOS 7.1

I have the same problem with my Harman Kardon BT headphones just received as gift for xmas. Audio sync is fine on my MBA mid 2012 with Yosemite, but on my 4th gen iPad and iPhone 6+ both running IOS 8.1.2 have sound lag.

I agree. On the iPad Air 2 the A/V sync is off, but when watching the same movie on Netflix on my MBP it syncs just fine. So its gotta be Airplay. I wonder if that's something that Netflix needs to bypass. I don't understand why it uses Airplay instead of direct audio through the Bluetooth connection.

A/V sync seems fine watching videos in the native iPad video app. Tried streaming Guardians of the Galaxy and it is synced perfectly. "Finger to the throat means death."

Also tried it with Flixster and it seems to be pretty spot on.

So it seems to me that its something to do with the Netflix app and possibly other apps that use Airplay for Bluetooth. So Netflix needs to change the way it plays audio for devices or the way it uses Airplay.

Unless I am mistaken your headphones/earphones are bluetooth wireless rather than using Airplay.

To use AirPlay a manufacturer requires their product to be an Apple certified device over a TCP/IP network and generally uses broadcast packets so it won't find speakers on a different subnetwork without advanced network tunneling and setup.

Even though WiFi/Airplay does share some of the radio frequencies that are the same as Bluetooth, the two do not communicate with each other. A bluetooth audio connection is much better for stereo headsets as it allows the device to play / pause / control volume as well as sending the music using less battery power than a WiFi chipset can.

From the testing I have done and others have commented on within this discussion thread, Apple owned products should be pretty close to being fixed (i.e. Beats). The issue with A/V sync was resolved on Yosemite first and then an iOS software update came with 8.1.1, which was close (but not perfect) to fixing the issue on iOS devices. With third party products, it's going to be hit & miss result and ultimately it is down to the manufacturer to resolve any issues with their products, unless they have a special relationship with Apple to encourage a more collaborative effort to fix any issues. Some will be apple to update the firmware of their headphones/earphones but I can't comment on them as I don't have direct knowledge of them.

I have changed from a pair of Beats Powerbeats 2's which had problems on every Apple device but not Windows or Android, to a pair of Plantronics BackBeat Go 2's with which I have had no issue at all on any device. The Beats seem to be almost there, but I've heard a lot of talk  (on here and other forums) about the Parrot BT headphones being poor when it comes to A/V syncing too.

count me in. I just bought a pair of the studio wireless today. They work great with my iPhone 6 plus, but my 2011 27" iMac, have the skip on everything, music, gaming, video.

Looks like I am taking these back.

I am just as disappointed as many of you are. Unfortunately i have not had success by updating my products.. i also want to point out to all the users and people reading this.. this issue is not limited to video sync.. try using any music app such as garage band.. DJAY 2 or Traktor DJ ALL have massive delays that make it impossible to use my new Powerbeats2 headphones.. whats the point of spending such a premium price tag of money when it can't work.. I've tested this on my Late 2009 15" macbook pro, my 2011 Mac Mini, iPhone 6 & iPad Mini with iOS 8.1.2 and the latest version of Yosemite on all Mac products none have worked in sync. I also want to point out the issue is not limited to video or apps this happens with music too only your not seeing or synchronizing anything with music playback. There is certainly a delay with music as well.

    Lastly,

Apple will not address this issue till this thread picks up enough claims. To them, we are a "small percentage of customers" im not saying Apple is the villain here. Im only suggesting that these issues have not reached the proper individuals to speed up thr process on correcting this issue... Keep in mind bluetooth is an expertise of Apple, they are one of the leaders on the SIG Bluetooth board and are always ahead and leading bluetooth innovations. I know they can fix this we simply need to get this message to them.

have the same issue with my powerbeats2 and iPhone 5s .  How can Apple put their own name behind the Powerbeats2 and not be compatible with the lag or signal strength.  Put my phone in my pocket and the signal cuts in and out???  Watch a video and 3 second delay??? I own a pair of Plantronics and have no issues whatsoever...... don't know who the culprit is but if Apple is selling/recommending Powerbeats2 with terrible connectivity.  Very disappointed!!!

I've had this issue from the very beginning with my Studio Wireless headphones paired to either my iPhone 5 or iPad Mini 2, but I just assumed it was just the nature of bluetooth products till I tried them on the MacBook Pro. It was pretty well in sync. I got an iPhone 6 several days ago, and out of curiosity when reading this thread I just now tried the headphones for the first time with it. It's actually in sync! Running iOS 8.1.2, My iPad Mini 2 is running the same OS, but it's out of sync.

This is strange as some here have said they experienced the issue with the 6 and 6 Plus, and some like me found that it's in sync. And it seems the majority have found that it's in sync on the MacBooks, or other computers.

I am still searching for a pair of quality bluetooth headphones that do not have the audio-video sync issue on any device.  Anyone find the unicorn yet?

Looks like there is an update on the BeatsbyDre website to correct this issue.  Seems to have fixed the problem! www.beatsbydre.com/support/updater.html

You probably did this already, but did you remember to "Forget" the connection entry in your Bluetooth settings then re-pair it again?

I don't think its a firmware issue with the headphones because the A/V sync is fine when using them with my Macbook Pro running Yosemite. Its only with iOS.

But yes, I did unfair the headphones from the iPad many times since I ran the update almost a month ago. There have been no updates since, and the problem still persist.
