Q: Previously working Apple Track pad cannot be "found" by Mac Mini

First I tried replacing the batteries. Both placed in the chute, negative side down. ( positives meet negatives)

Is this right?

--- if so, other ideas why I'm not connecting?

Are the old batteries dirty?
Do they have residue from leakage? That can stop the contacts working.
