Q: Best way to prepare iPhoto 8.1.2 for OS upgrade

I have an iMac (purchased 2010) still running OSX 10.6.8 and I have iPhoto ‘09 Version 8.1.2.  My library contains 18,000 pictures and is 41 GB. I’ve scanned lots of old slides and I don’t want to lose all my labeling of photos.  I have Time Machine doing automatic backups.  And I also have an additional external hard drive to which I could copy my iPhoto Library.

I need to load some income tax software but my operating system is too old.  I need to upgrade, but I’ve read enough to be scared of the possible consequences to iPhoto.

I am so reluctant to upgrade to Yosemite at this point that I am considering Mountain Lion, which is still available from Apple.

Will iPhoto 8.1.2 work with Mountain Lion?

What steps can I take before upgrading the OS to ensure I have a smooth transition and can recover from any problems encountered?

What will I need to do in iPhoto after upgrading the operating system?

I need very clear and specific instructions since my understanding of how all this works is very tenuous. Thanks so much!

    1. Can I use iPhoto Library Manager version 3.2.4 to do the rebuild?

Yes.  I believe it will rebuild older versions like you have. If you plan on rebuilding an iPhoto 9.x library you'll need the newer version of iPLM.

“Encountered unknown tag html on line 2.”

You'll have to check with the developer on that.  It might mean there's a damaged xml file in the library.  In that case rebuilding may not be a viable solution.

    2.

What you can do  with the second library is to copy the Originals folder to the Desktop.  Then import that folder into your primary library and if there are any duplicates iPhoto will tell you and you can exclude them from the import.

    3.  iPhoto Library Recovered Photos.  I spot checked and these pictures all seem to be in iPhoto. Can I (should I) delete this folder and its contents?

Where is this folder?  If it's outside the iPhoto Library package then it would be OK to delete.  If the folder is in iPhoto in the left hand pane it's really an album and you can delete it because the photos in it are only links to the original photos in their Events.

    4. Is this anything to worry about or can I just delete it?

First delete one picture in the newer event and make sure it remains in one of the other two.  If so then go ahead and delete the newer event.

Once again many thanks for responding.

    1. I have sent an email to FatCat about the error message.

    2.  With regard to your reply to #2.  The only Originals folder I can find is the one that is in the iPhoto Library in the /Users/Shared folder  I don’t see another one.

In the Finder under Users/Medley/Pictures there is a Folder called iPhoto Library.  It contains:

    Album Data.xml

    com.apple.iPhoto.plist

    Dir.data

    iPhoto.ipspot

    iPhotoLock.data

    Library.iPhoto  (4 KB)

    Library6.iPhoto (168 KB)

Can I drag the whole Folder to the Trash with confidence?  Will it disappear from iPhoto Library Manager as well or do I have to do something?

    3.  The iPhoto Library Recovered Photos is outside the iPhoto Library package.

    4.  I did as you suggested and the photo stayed in the Event where it belonged after I deleted it from the newer Event.  I deleted the extra Event.

    5.  From what I have seen in researching an OS X upgrade, it will no longer be possible for two Users on the same iMac to share an iPhoto Library.

Would I be correct in assuming that each user would have her own library?

If so, would it be better at this point to rebuild the library in Users/Medley/Pictures?  Or is that adding an unnecessary variable to the process?

    6.  Also with regard to using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild:  I understand I can see a Preview of the rebuilt library and decide whether I want to accept it.  But since I have not been aware of having trouble with my existing Library, how do I know whether the rebuilt one is an improvement?

    More thanks!

2 - Yes.  That is an incomplete library.  Delete it.

3 - Then you can import those photos along with those in the Originals folder of the library in the Shared folder into a new library.

5 - Two users can share an iPhoto library if it's on an external hard drive and is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored:

    ignoreownership.png

6 - No. iPLM will display what's in the library you're trying to rebuild, not what the new rebuilt library will look like.  However, since the original library is untouched when iPLM rebuilds it you can delete the rebuild library if it's not what you want after opening it with iPhoto and go back to the original library.

You can share a library on an external drive formatted  Mac OS extended (journaled) with ownership ignored - iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users - Apple Support

If you do not share a library on an external drive then yes each needs their own library - or a third account that you both use for iPhoto and any other shared projects

I’m tying hard to understand this.

    3. There are about 500 photos in iPhoto Library Recovered Photos.  Luckily, they are in a single sequence of IMG numbers.  I opened Finder windows for both that folder and the folder in which these same photos are stored in Originals in the Shared folder, and I compared the two lists.  They are all in both places.

Do I still need to do anything with the items in iPhoto Library Recovered Photos?

I don’t understand what you mean by importing those photos “along with those in the Originals folder in the Shared folder.”  Am I actually going to have to Import the Originals folder into iPhoto?  Isn’t it what is already there?

    5. Sharing a single Library is not very important to us and we don’t want to use an external drive—nor do we want to use Larry’s suggestion of a third account (but thanks for the idea).

So I repeat my question: would it be better at this point to rebuild the library in Users/Medley/Pictures?  Or is that adding an unnecessary variable to the process?

    6.  Still not able to picture this.  Will I have two libraries “forever”?  Or will I have to choose one eventually?

If the Medley library has all of the photos then rebuild it and see if you can get it working as it should.

    Progress report and follow-up question.

Jason at Fat Cat Software kindly gave me a link to upgrade iPhoto Library Manager.

I used that to rebuild my Library.

The only problem was with the two most recent Events—the ones I reported (Feb 5, 2015 item #4) had misbehaved after I restored the Library from a Time Machine backup.  They each appeared properly as two separate Events but also combined into a third Event.  I had deleted the Combined Event before the rebuild.  After the rebuild, there were two Events but with 27 photos missing from one and 14 from the other.  The Log showed they could not be found.

I chose to keep the rebuilt library because its contents looked more logical and tidy when I compared the contents of the packages.

Yesterday I loaded Mountain Lion and today I opened iPhoto with the rebuilt library.  It seems to be fine but I need to restore the missing photos.

I had exported those Events from iPhoto with all their metadata before starting this whole process. Can I delete the two incomplete Events and import from my Exported copies?  Will that bring in the metadata?  Or is it safer to re-import the images without those additions and re-label them?

I hope importing with metadata is a good idea.  I don’t mind re-labeling 80 photos but would not want to have to re-label 18,000 if I should ever need to!

I know I could just try it and see what happens but as must be clear, I am a cautious person!

Again thanks to all for your help
