Q: Aperture not creating previews for all photos

Hi all,

I have a couple related issues here.  First of, what i am trying to do is use Aperture previews as a way to sync lower res photos to my iPad.  The iPad is pretty full and soon i won't be able to fit all my photos on there anymore, and i like having them all on there.  While looking up a way to to this i found a site that says that if i use Aperture, then iTunes syncs the preview to the iPad.  Perfect i thought.

So i imported all my photos into Aperture, but it still synced the same size photos to the iPad as iPhoto did, despite having set the preview size right (Hlaf size and 10).  So thats one issue, why is it not syncing that size?

Other, potentially bigger issue is that it is n to generating previews for all my photos.  Going through them it appears its only doing so for photos taken with my iPhone.  I also have a Canon, two or three in the life of my photo library, and there are no previews for any photos taken with those cameras.

A small sample, a folder with 220 odd photos only has about 90ish photos in the preview folder.  To test this i made a new library and just added one at at time to count the previews.

Any help with all this would be very much appreciated, i like having all my family pictures there on the iPad, otherwise i never really look at them.....but i also like having other stuff on there, which is becoming difficult as its pretty squishy in there

My guess is, you've already generated previews of a larger size, and you now need to 1) generate previews for images for previews that don't exist, 2) regenerate previews for images that match your new preference.

Note: Important: After you change the Preview preferences, Aperture will use your new settings to generate previews for subsequent images you import. To regenerate previews with the new settings for existing images:

Are you syncing with iTunes? The size of the photos synced to the iPad will be determined by iTunes, depending on the size of the photos the mobile device can display.

Which version of iOS do you have on your iPad?

If you have iOS 8.2, you colludes iCloud Photo Library on the iPad and keep the photos in iCloud. Then only optimzed smaller versions need to be stored on the device, see: iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ

    Howdy, thanks for your input.

I Tried making a whole new library and then added in just a small amount of photos.

What I have is the correct size previews for the photos taken with the iPhone and none for the all the others (canon camera photos)

but but when I sync my iPad a still get full size photos.

Even if it did sync the preview size though, half of my photos still don't have previews.

    HI Leonie,

yes I am using iTunes, I didn't know there was another way TBH. Can I sync direct with aperture ?

i Originally got the idea of using aperture to sync lower res copies of my photos from a thread on here that said the preview size pics are what's synced.

    Cheers!
