Has the hard drive ever been replaced in this Mac? Do you have the original install discs for it?

Hi there. First, what operating system are you running? If you have an os that is newer that Snow Leopard and need to get to the restore partition you hold down the option or option r keys on start up.  If not you need an install disk to do this. If this is not possible. http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS2570  orhttp://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203176  If you are able to use the restore option or have an install disk you can boot to you can use this to check and repair permissions or start up disk using disk utilities.

I thanks for both of your replies.  I do not have the disks.  It's running Snow Leopard.  I tried option r keys on start up and nothing.  Is there anyway to make a it boot from a flash drive?   The hard drive hasn't been replaced.

Hi there. If you have a flash drive that is bootable yes. That is having a system install installed on it. Did you try any of the option you could run in the links I gave you. Such as /reset pram/ safe boot/single user mode.

Ok, reset the pram.  Did a safe boot where I could see the information and single user mode and ran /sbin/fsck -fy. Looks like the hard drive is bad???  I get exited with signal 8.

Anything else the I can, try?

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi there. What is happening is single user  Tried to repair the disk but cannot. You have a disk error that it can't repair. If you can get it to run in safe mode ,you could back up your personal files. Then you have two options Clean install the operating system or replace the internal drive. If you know someone that has an install disk. Ether a universal install that will install on any mac or a install disk for Macbook's, that you can use or copy as bootable to a flash drive. You could then try a clean install. Using disk utilities in the install drive ,you erase the entire  drive and then partition it to one partition, select option and select GUID then run partition and then install operating system.
