Q: My Retina Display has stain damage, HELP!!!

photo.JPG

I dont know how it happened, but somehow my retina display got some weird clear-ish stain damage that is very noticable on a black background. I have tried to clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth like usual, but i think this is not something on top of the screen as much as it is something has like eaten away a part of the screen... I need help! what do i do to solve this aside from replacing the screen... if water and microfiber arent working, what else can i use? I am worried that windex or alcohol will excacerbae the problem, as i suspect it might have been alcohol that caused the problem in the first place, but im not sure... any insight, please? this is driving me nuts

Yep, same here... Mid 2012 15". Got 16GB Ram and 512GB hardrive and the i7 processor so it wasn't a cheap machine. Out of warranty now... And the problem seems to get worse by the day.

Don't worry about warranty. Mine is still under warranty and it changes nothing. I paid extra for extended warranty and... useless

Apple, could we at least get a comment from you on the problem?

    I would not expect.

Today , Spain , I was in reseller store after Apple Support telephone call .......

They says me NO .... under warranty , 10 month old macbook pro .... they says NO , they dont repair my mac.......

They says that was my fault...............because i used "corrosive" liquids.......

Apple dont cover cosmetic issues.... he says

if i was using hard , alkaline liquids , produtcs ,to clean , i will get big zones in screen damaged irregular way , not this , not a little spot in a corner!!!

i used apple cloth , black ones that comes with the macbook , how they expect i will clean a screen that i cannot touch??????? dust , accidental fingerprints ....

needs to be cleaned !!! is a screen !!!

Next week , goes by car , 69km to an official apple store..... i will go to the end on this history....

For me is horrible , fuel cost (69km and here very expensive fuel) , 1500 euros macbook pro , i was saving for 3 years to buy my first mac to start with ableton live....

and more , when i will need a new one , i will not sell my old mac for the same money than a perfect screen one......

my bill scream right now.... im not rich , i will never be

My old toshiba looks like NEW , and is 8 years old.....  but looks new.

so sad , and sorry my english , but im very sad now , i dont expect this when i bought my unit , when i trust Apple.

Should it be necessary to add a screen protection to a high-end Apple product to prevent damage from daily use?????

Rather we should ask Apple three questions, which they so far have not given an answer to:

    1. How does Apple suggest we carry around our portable laptops (portable, mind you!) to prevent marks on the screen from the keyboard?

    2. How does Apple suggest we clean the screen (daily cleaning necessary) to remove the marks from the keyboard?

    3. What guarantee does Apple give that the same problem will not occur, should we decide to spend almost 1000$ to repair our laptop which for many of us is still under warranty?

    With kind regards

The stain issue probably didn't go away. At least if it was a coating issue.

I suppose it simply spread to the entire screen so you no longer see the lack of coating.

    Correct?

Yes or not. Probably if you use it and when you will change it you remove it with rest of ar-coating. And service will explain you it's your fault, glue reacts with coating and damages it.

Apple no, it is not cosmetic issue. I bought this device because I like to work outside in full sunshine. AR defect is serious lack of original functionality.

You know it very well, customers buy your products because it looks good, it is not faster or better in any way from competitors in the same price but I expect it will looks great and has solid case. So don't fool customers saying this.

Apple managers!? What would you say when you see similar "cosmetic" varnish damage on your 10 months old BMW and car-dealer will say you "It is becouse your sweat hands touch it." ?

Ah, I waste me time writing here.

the answer maybe the black rubber edge around the screen. hopefully they will reiterate the design.

So what could you do to protect the screen ?

AFAIK, screen protectors do not use any adhesive substance, removing it will definitely not affect the anti-reflective coating.

This is the question for Apple.

We know they read the debate here, for they sometimes remove comments (mine included) but they do not answer the many questions from their customers.

    Thank you for your support.

Sorry. But you are asking the wrong question.

It is not a question of what WE as customers can do.

Rather it is the question of what APPLE will do.

The ball is on Apples's side. Keep it there.

    Again, Apple!

You are removing one of my comments.

How do you expect that we react to this issue, when Apple will not respond and take responsibility?

I'm using a Moshi iVisor which hides the faulty patches around the bezel and hopefully will stop it spreading to the screen proper.  Apple sell these directly from their store so I'd hope removing it won't strip the AR coating further (though pretty sure it will).  The protector creates a diffused/grainy effect which isn't ideal, but also eliminates the annoying reflection - so swings and roundabouts.

    Unbelievable

I have the same issue and was just about posting a question, when I saw this posting. I was afraid that I was doing something wrong, but apparently just simply touching the screen and closing the lid is enough to cause this problem. And by the looks of things, I'm one of the MANY that have the wrong fingers!

Considering that I paid Euro 2400 for my Macbook Pro, it is a shame. This is second time that I'm bitten by the believe that Apple products are more expensive because they have a better quality. The first one was when I bought the iPhone 4 and had reception problems, because even then I had the wrong fingers/hand, holding the phone apparently wrong.

    I'm seriously disappointed!

Today I got reply from Apple's Relations Executive in Ireland after having the engineering team overlook my case once again:

"It is caused by external factors like grease from my fingers or the use of liquids. And it is not covered by warranty."

I am henceforth referred to Apple website, where I am welcome to ask any question or to one of their authorised retailers

who will be happy to replace the screen for around US$ 950.

Please view the Facebook group for further comments.
