I'm getting a 'panic' message on first run of OS 10.4.8. Help.

    Generally a hardware problem, but let's see if we can get any more info in Verbose mode...

     

    1. Shut down your Mac if it is on.
    2. Press the power button to start the computer.
    3. Immediately press and hold the Command key and the following:
    • the "v" key for verbose mode.  (Command-V)

    Hey.

     

    Thank you so much for responding. I just tried the Command-V thing, but when it had run, the Mac tried to start up again, but didn't get passed the Keyboard Language screen before the 'panic' message came back.

    So, no text displayed at all?

     

    Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...

     

    /sbin/fsck -fy

     

    Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.

     

    (Space between fsck AND -fy important).

    Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

    Thanks again, I really appreciate your help. The screen now says…

     

    Waiting for remote debugger connection.

    kdp–poll: no debugger device

    Does it boot in Safe Mode with Shift key held at startup?

     

    Do you have the original startup discs?

     

    Boot off your *original* Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some Discs have it inexplicably on Disc #2. Some models have a separate AHT CD.

     

    Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

    It's very late here in the UK, so I'll try running through those options in the morning and get back to you then if that's OK with you. I do have original startup discs BTW.

    OK, I think we're getting somewhere.

     

    I started in Safe mode which worked fine. I then reset the NVRAM and let it restart three times.

     

    I've opened a few of the bundled applications. All fine.

     

    It's only when I try to join a network that it hits a problem: a falling grey screen and a 'you need to restart your computer' message.

     

    Any suggestions?

    Good work Melanie!

     

    Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.

     

    Click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v

     

    A few dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

    I didn't copy and paste from the old laptop, because I can't connect to a network. So I'm sending you a photo of the screen, hope you can read it OK, and that it has enough info.

    What interface is it using to connect to the Internet?

     

    Might try this...

     

    Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.

     

    Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...

     

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

     

    Then Apply.

    I tried that but the system crashed when I tried to connect via AirPort with a new location. I reverted to the Automatic location, checked the AirPort configuration, dragged it to the top and then hit the Assist Me button. I ran Network Diagnostics until I came to 'Choose network port configuration', clicked Continue and the system crashed again.

    To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

     

    Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

     

    Does it work in the new account?
