Q: How do I delete photos that are not viewable in iTunes, on my iPhone, or in iPhoto?

I am trying to update my iPhone 4s to the latest version of iOS 8.1.3, but i am repeatedly getting a 'storage almost full' message. When I plugged my phone into my iMac to view the iTunes summary of my storage, it says I have over 1000 photos, but on my phone I can only view and manage about 180. I have deleted more than half of my apps and a good number of photos I would rather not have lost, but I am still getting this message about a mysterious extra 800 photos. How can I view and delete these to free up space on my phone?

If you use a Mac you can open the Image Capture program in your applications folder. With your phone plugged in, the program will show you all the images on your device. You can also bulk delete images.

settings>icloud>photos>disable the following
icloud photo library (beta)
upload to my photo stream
icloud photo sharing

settings>photos & camera>make sure this section is disabled too

You could also go through your messages app and see if you have videos or photos in there. Delete unwanted emails and empty the trash in each account. If you are trying to update over wifi try doing it by plugging into iTunes.
