Q: Question about the ability to listen to music and my Apple account

Due to the small memory capacity of an iPhone 6 (128GB) I usually listen to my music with my iPod classic. However, I also use my iPhone 6 occasionally as well.

I have no memory of ever doing anything to "set up" music on my iPhone 6.  However, some how many of my songs are there.   I had to change my credit card number.  So, for a few days I have no valid credit card. I have discovered that my iPhone 6 will no longer play music via Bluetooth in my car.

When I try to play music I am presented with a pop-up asking me to update my payment information, which I cannot do for another day or two. So while this is not really a big deal, I don't know why am asking for payment information regarding songs I paid for a long time ago.

Can anyone illuminate this situation for me?

You can change your payment information to none.  I don't know if iTunes Match requires you keep a valid card on the account.

I am guessing your music may be playing on the phone via iCloud, but is not actually on the phon, which may be why you are getting this pop up.

I avoid the cloud entirely.  (Or at least I try to.)

I notice next to my songs there is an icon of a cloud with an arrow pointing down.  Does that offer any clues?  Remember, I never took any steps to set up music on my iPhone 6, these songs simply "appeared".

Those are songs you have purchased from the iTunes Store and they are showing as available for download from the cloud (if you purchase music from the iTunes Store you are using the cloud) if you choose to do so.

You must have one of the 160GB Classics.

Yes, several.  And they are NOT for sale !

That's what I figured. Is there a way to download these songs so they are stored locally on the iPhone ?   Otherwise, I would not have access to this content when I do not have Internet access.  Moreover, aren't I using up my data by repeatedly downloading the same song over and over again ?

If you tap the cloud icon it will download them to your iPhone. They aren't being downloaded at all until you do this.

Looks like I have about 700 songs. So I have to "tap" 700 times ?

Last thing.   I have too much music to fit on my iPhone. Is there a way I can control what content will be downloaded on my iPhone?

128Gb iPhone is "small memory capacity”?

It’s the largest iPhone there is.

Correct, 128Gb IS small.  Need 256Gb.

Because of the poor quality of sound from iPod, I try to compensate by having my music in the Apple Lossless format.  This takes more memory.
