Q: MBP Mid 2012 model

Hi there,

I have a question regarding the model version of my MBP. I have Purchased my MBP in January 2015 (January 20th) and I'm surprised to see in the "About this Mac" information, that it is a Mid 2012 model. I had to run the update to Yosemite, as it was not the latest version installed when I bought the computer.

Is this a common thing with apple ? There's nothing wrong with the MBP, but I feel a bit disappointed to start with a brand new Macbook Pro which is technically three years old.

Thanks for any feedback.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

    Where was it purchased?

Was it listed as a Refurbished unit?

It was purchased in an Apple store in Aix en Provence, France.

Was not listed as refurbished unit.

I'm not sure to get this right, but I've read on the Apple support page linked below, that unless it is a Retina (which mine isn't) the MBP 13 inch are Mid 2012.

Don't know how to understand this though.

The current MacBook/Pro 13-inch Mid-2012 model is the Current one, if you are

not wanting a Retina display model, and sought to have an optical drive inside...

These were not 'built in 2012' -- that was the year of introduction of build model.

The Retina models saw a recent upgrade and their date was Late 2014. And

the information on those could be found among data from http://mactracker.ca

or http://everymac.com or in the Apple Store current product specifications.

Just like my Late 2012 i7 Mac MINI quad-core model, wasn't built in 2012; it was

built in 2014 January; the line was discontinued in October 2014. A new model

for the specific MacBook Pro 13-inch non-Retina, with optical drive, hasn't been

built yet since yours is still offered in the Apple Store online & is still in production.

The advantage to the Mid-2012 MacBook Pro you have, is that you can upgrade

the RAM memory chips to 16GB total; a feature the Mini which I have, shares.

Newest build-models have the RAM memory soldered-in, so it's not upgradable.

    Hopefully this helps.

    Good luck & happy computing!

Thank you very much K Shaffer,

That makes sense now and matches with what I read in the link posted in my previous message.

Thank you for taking the time to help replying, with all those informations, much appreciated.

    Best regards

    Stephane

If perchance you wondered about Mavericks 10.9 system, as some thought it more desireable

than Yosemite (peripherals, drivers, and some third-party software liked it) you could still get a

copy of it since it was shipped with the computer, and then you could make a standalone offline

installer on USB flash drive; there are instructions online or by using DiskMakerX.com script.

Your model may have been older recent stock, as was mine, (my Mini shipped with Mavericks)

but is otherwise current. Some versions of iPhoto and iLife were preferred by some users, so

that is why a second system (perhaps on external HDD or SSD) could be of interest to some.

Before I took delivery of my Mini from Apple (shipped to AK from AppleStore US online) I was

able to see the serial number in the shipping invoice sent by email from Apple, so I used an

online indentify-by-serial-number service to see the month, year, and other details of assembly.

    https://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php

And saw that mine was made almost a year before I bought it, still new stock, direct from Apple.

But mine is of a discontinued model version, that I wanted, due build & upgradability of design.

The newest Mini has RAM affixed to the logic board, the only way to upgrade is in advance

by purchasing higher-cost model. Like MacBook. So I can simply upgrade RAM to max later.

Hopefully your new purchase will suffice and be helpful in however many ways as it is useful.

    Good luck & happy computing!
