Q: File Transfers slow between two iMac 5K Retina Macs on same network

I have been looking for a few weeks for a solution to my slow network file transfers between two new iMac 5K Retina Macs. They both are high-configured and only have SSD storage.  They run OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 and all other updates are current. I have tried via ethernet and wi-fi (type N) and get about the same results. The worst part is I have 30+ mbps internet speed and I can download a huge file quicker than I can copy it between two $4K Macs!!!!.  The speed is about 1-2MBytes/sec. If I copy a folder with say 1.5GB in 7 files it takes 16 mins or so.

I have tried afp://, smb://, cifs:// protocols and all are slow.

My previous iMacs and MacBook Pros with Snow Leopard never had this issue.

Any suggestions?

OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Gen 4

After upgrading to Yosemite 10.10.2 the problem is unchanged.  Remote folder browsing slow as well.

Hi. When you connected the iMacs together, did you do

    • wifi
      • (A) from one to the other directly (one mac creating a wifi network)
      • (B) or through router?
    • ethernet
      • (C) from one to the other directly (one cable ethernet from one tho the other )
      • (D) or through router?

If you only did B and D, try to do A and/or C. and see if it changes. If it does change, then it is likely that your router is a bit old and handles (new technology) intranet transfers inefficiently

    Hi.

The Router is about a year old and like I mentioned the old Macs using the same router did not have this issue. That would only affect the Wireless N transfers. The ethernets are connected to a separate Gigabit hub separate from the router.  I normally use the Wireless N but used the ethernet for this testing. Even my downloads of software updates are two to three times faster so I don't think it is the Wireless Router all of a sudden BTW it is a Cisco/Linksys E1200.

Setting up peer-to-peer network is not something I've tested

I have seen others with this same issue since Yosemite.

I am having the same problem but i think the problem is somewhere in the user settings.

i created a 500mb file and tried to copy it to the OSX server - it took 6 minutes to transfer. this is a brand new mini - with user data restored from a time machine backup of a MBP.

i switched users on the mini to admin user and the transfer took less than 5 seconds

other macs on the network transferred the same file in 5 seconds.

what settings should i be looking at with the user in question?

I am having the same problem.  Just upgraded from two Mid-2011 iMacs t two Late-2015 5K iMacs and there is a distinct drop in speed transferring via ethernet between the two computers than there was before.  This is not an issue with the router, cables, or anything other than the iMacs themselves because no other variables have changed (GB ethernet router, cat6 cables).

I suspect this is either an El Capitan issue (as the OS is a variable that has changed) or something within the hardware.

    Any help is appreciated.
