Q: music disappeared from ipod touch

5000 songs disappeared from my ipod touch,  However, when I look at the itunes panel for “On My Device”, I see all my music listed – they just aren’t on my ipod anymore. They will not play on the computer either, an exclamation point comes up with no explanation.

    Hi,

I had the same problem and managed to fix it by syncing as shown in the diagram. After selecting your device in the top bar, go to Summary and in Options check the box for "Sync only checked songs and videos."  Leave "manually manage music" unchecked. Then go down to Music and check Sync Music. Depending on how much space you have you can select Entire music library or Selected playlists, etc. Then hit Apply on bottom right. It will take a while to sync.

The "exclamation point " means that iTunes on the computer can't find the music files.

Try to fine the media by:

iTunes: Finding lost media and downloads

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

You will have to reimport any other music into your iTunes libray.

After they are in your iTunes library:

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

    - Unsync/delete all music and resync

To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Manage Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music

    - Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

    - Restore from backup. See:

iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Many thanks for the information about this problem. Over the last two weeks I have had to re-synch several times as every time I had finished moving new songs onto my iPod Touch 5G and switched off, I lost all my songs? Or so I thought. I have carried out your suggestion and it is now up and running again, hopefully without any more problems.

    Glad to hear that.

I was wondering why I lost all my songs and I think it may have been that in Summary > Options I checked the box for Manually manage music, then Apply. I thought I could keep all my stuff and just manually add other things later but it may have wiped everything off. I'm not completely sure about this, but it's worth being careful about. Even with that box unchecked, I can still drag songs to iPhone or iPad manually without any problem.

    Good luck.
