Q: Random Blue Screen Crash with 5S and iOS 8.1

Since upgrading to iOS 8.0 my iPhone 5S randomly gets blue screens and then crashes and goes into a loop of boot up, blue screen, reboot, blue screen, reboot...etc. My 5S did this again today when during my upgrade to iOS 8.1 via USB and I was forced to do a factory restore on it. The blue screen is still occurring after the restore and 8.1 upgrade. Is this a known issue? I was hoping this was going to get fixed with 8.1 but unfortunately, it doesn't look like it has.

Correction to my last post, my  Model is an iPad 4 Retina. Although we have had no more BSOD (blue screens) since mid-December, there have been two occasions recently when the screen goes dead, displaying only the Apple logo, no obvious reason. This requires a manual reset using the home and on/off buttons simultaneously. No great deal but not very confidence inspiring.

If Apple are to maintain their reputation they must address these problems which often seem to happen just outside the 1 year guarantee period. Just to acknowledge that there is a problem would be something.

I've had this issue too, within a week it's entered recovery mode twice and less than 24 hours after the last time, it's crashed and had a blue screen. I've had issues restoring it. It's getting to the point that I'm considering leaving Apple when I get my next upgrade!

    Just Happened this morning,

Phone won't boot.  Tried restarting, nothing.  Plugged it into my Mac (updated) and it says can't restore.  Popup says iPhone needs to be restored/updated.  Goes through the motions.  iPhone looks like its getting worked on.  Bar pops up and it just sits there.  iTunes then says unknon Error occured (9).  A link is provided for more information to this iTunes: Resolve USB-related alerts - Apple Support

    Update:

Went to Apple Store.  Was given the run around they had to test it and make sure that indeed it was bricked.  Turns out my phone was 150ish days out of warranty.  I explained assertively that the update as it is a new resigned contract has extended temporarily a "service agreement" for malfunctioning devices due to a technical update.  To which he wished this existed however that this doesn't technically exist but should.  He asked what I believe should happen and I explained that seeing its not my fault and it was due to an update that I should get either a new phone or fix this one.  He explained that they can not just give me a phone.  To which I rebutted with the same comments that I did nothing wrong.  Politely he asked what I would be willing to negotiate on.  I asked for 100$ would be my limit, he asked half of the cost of the phone which was 250$ish... I agreed and got a new phone.

I experienced all the same signs/symptoms as the rest of you. I did all of the recommended steps (updating the software, BFU hard restart, factory reset through iTunes, etc) but I kept getting the blue screen of death. It was happening completely randomly and without any triggers - even in the middle of the night. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar at my closest Apple store and they replaced the phone, no questions asked. It is a hardware problem and has nothing to do with the new iOS download. My "genius" said that it's happening frequently with their customers, and has mostly happened with 5s phones (although they have seen the occasional 6). If you phone is still under warranty, I suggest swapping out phones as this is a problem Apple is well aware of and they are willing to replace damaged goods.

Just got back from the Apple Genius Bar.

In December, my iPhone 5S (which was just over a year old) started showing the blue screen and restarted. It got more and more frequent over time. Since I was abroad, I decided to wait until I get back to the US in January to deal with it. I tried restoring the phone from fresh in iTunes. Once I did that, the phone showed the "Connect to iTunes" screen and wouldn't restarted. Trying to restore (not from backup) did not help.

Took the phone to the Apple store. They looked at it and said there is a graphics card issue and the phone needs to be replaced. Since the phone was (JUST) over a year old, I was out of warranty and needed to pay out of pocket to replace the phone. Great....

A week later I ordered an iPhone 5S for work (through my employer). Guess what? I am now seeing the same issue! At this point, my work phone is in infinite loop of restarts.

    So, let's sum up:

Personal phone: bought in Dec 2014, black, 32GB, AT&T.

Work phone: bought in Jan 2015, white, 16GB, Verizon.

Clearly, different phones, yet showing the same symptoms.

Back to my trip the Apple store today: "oh, clearly a hardware issue! Your phone needs to be replaced." Me: "clearly the same issue as my personal phone. Seems like there's something defective in manufacturing." 'Genius' employee: "yes, it looks like the same issue, but your personal phone is out of warranty."

So there you have it! Instead of RECALLING the phones and fixing them, it's just easier to replace those under warranty with refurbished ones (or whatever marketing name Apple gives it), and have customers pay for replacements.

Well i been having the same problem and apple seems to just don´t care, oviusly is a software problem, it all started after the 8.1 update, y have to erase the phone, set as a new phone, then restore it from an iCloud back up over wifi, because iTunes doesn't  recognize  it, and some apps didn't installed i had to erase emoji app and install manual the other ones direct from the app store, now its working fine so far its been a month, and iTunes now recognizes the phone, the problem is an app that is having conflict with the iOS 8.. Can't pinpoint which one is it, had some trouble reinstalling  google maps. And I'm not using  the finger print id.  I can't believe apple is ignoring this problem unbelievable, very disappointing. One thing is for sure, it is NOT a hardware problem.

I refer to my posting of January 16th, my iPad 4 failed again and nothing I could do would restore it.Took it to the Apple Genius Bar and after several attempts the helpful young man managed to restore it via iTunes back-up. It worked for a week or so and then back to its old tricks, failure to boot-up, or crashing with blue or Appl;e logo screen.

I have had enough, this £400 pound iPad, not much over a year old, is unreliable and too much trouble for me to persist with.

Under the UK Sale of Goods Act a product should be fit for purpose and I think any reasonable person would agree that an expensive tablet should give more than a year of service. From the many comments I have read my problem with the IPad is far from unusual so it seems very clear that Apple are turning out products that are unreliable. The question is what will Apple do about it, I will have another go at the Apple Store and update this forum in due course.

Apple 5s *****..!!!!!  , We have an issue with our iphone 5s which we bought just 1 year  2 weeks  before ..

As one year got over any issues will not be covered by apple. My phone started giving blue screen continuosly in infinite loop.

I took it to the apple store and they says "It may be either software problem or hardware problem" and only solution they have is to reformat OS as if restarting is solution for everything or else you just have to throw your phone as it is not even eligible for trade in if it is not switching on.details of the issue , they are mentioning your warranty was expired 1 week before and we won't help you and  we don't  even trade the phone as it is unable to switch on.It is also mentioned that we are not responsible for the hardware issues as it was developed by the Third party company. I never expected that sort of response from Apple.

When i googled and youtube the issue , I surprised that  the issue is pretty much common in all 5s phones , and they are not even acknowledged the issue and makes  the customers forcibly buy  the  apple care  and apple insurance .

I really liked the products of apple earlier , but when this incident happened  to myself, I decided not to buy at all the ****** products of apple .. and they simply  just robbing the customers money.

I will never ever buy any Apple products in my life . I still regret of buying apple products.

Hope Apple should  not be releasing these sort of products just for the profits and selling with brand name.

it is not a software problem...It is hardware problem and apple is never bothered to recall defect products.

It just selling products with its brand name and people whoe are not much bothered about value for their money are continuously buying new versions without much new features.

I have the same issue on an iPhone 5s... very annoying. I reinstalled und updated the iPhone to the very latest iOS version. But the problem is still existing. For me it definitely seems to be a hardware problem. As the phone is out if warranty I the only thing I can do is getting rid of it by throwing away...
