You have version 8 and it can't be upgraded for free. You data is still stored on your machine and will import to the new version.

Feb 10, 2015 5:09 PM in response to Rtormoby Barney-15E,I don't think version 8 can be updated for free. You would need to purchase iPhoto from the App Store.
If you don't need Yosemite, revert to your previous OS.
The rumor sites seem to think the new Photos, which replaces iPhoto, will be part of the OS. So, you can wait until that is released and upgrade then.
Here are instructions for restoring a previous OS. Apple: Restoring a previous OS X version

Feb 10, 2015 5:12 PM in response to Rtormoby crosseyed Mary,I have this problem. When I try to open backed up time machine apps it won't work on yosemite. iPhoto, iTunes, etc. Says need to upgrade to Yosemite. Go to app store but it sees that I already HAVE yosemite so doesn't give me the option to update. How can I update back up drive to yosemite??? What else can I do. I drug these files out to my yosemite desktop but they still won't open!
