Q: Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow. Need help.

I Upgraded my MBP (2012), from Mavericks to Yosemite and it slowed my computer down to the point where it became unusable.  I repaired the permissions, and even reinstalled Yosemite but it didn't help.  My MBP is crawling and I'm hoping someone can walk me through a solution.  Need help.

    Hi Old Toad

I have the same problem as this guy... I want to cry from at last finding someone with the same problem hoping you could assist?

    To summarize:

Ihave a Macbook pro with 10.10.2 running.  Ever since I Upgraded to Yosemite I have had endless issues.  The most common issue is slowness and this freeking wheel turning on my screen like I am on the beach :-) Please instruct me - I am ready to follow your every command

Finally! This will make it easy. Uninstall all "clean up" software. Uninstall MacKeeper. Buy at least 8 GB of RAM. Replace your hard drive with an SSD. Should you need more specifics regarding how to follow these commands, they will be found in the new thread you start.

As for Aperture, is there an update available for it anywhere? It isn't available in my app store for the yosemite upgrade.

There was no need for a Yosemite upgrade to Aperture and it's being replaced real soon now: http://www.apple.com/aperture/

When Photos for OS X is available this spring, Aperture will no longer be available for purchase from the Mac App Store.

Lex,  I have uninstalled everything, however Roxio and symantec do not turn up in searches.

I am about to uninstall CS5 and all components to see if that remedies the issue. If not,

I can only assume it's a hardware issue even though upon checking it within utilities the hard

drive appears to be ok. Not sure what else I can do. I will also attempt to reinstall CS5 after

I have done this. The computer seems to be able to stay on for an hour or so at a time before

it shuts down from heat even though it does attempt to restart itself, it generally fails to do so.

    Thank you again~Jennifer

    MadMacs0,

I agree that the main issue's are these after market software programs, however

Apple is designing upgrade's for your computer that are causing numerous compatibility  issue's

with Apple Mac certified application's separate from these other program's. And to be honest, if there were no issue's

with these upgrade's Apple would be out of business. Thank you for your help.

    Huntville

I had the same issue, after thinking about this, added more RAM from 4 to 8 and nothing, well a full back up, crated an bootable USB memory drive, erased the HD and installed Yosemite clean, WOW, a different world, once it loaded the programs from my backup, is very fast. What happen? is that we mount OS onto OS, then things go south, I learned that next upgrade, I will erase the Hd and do it from scratch. Try you will be surprise.

So you have already run the Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, depending on what model MBP you own? It didn't sound to me as if you were having a hard drive issue, but then again, I don't think we have a total picture of your issue(s). I'm going to switch to your new topic shortly, which for anybody else can be found at Computer randomly shuts down/Very unstable since upgrade to yosemite.

Not exactly sure what an "Apple Mac certified application" is, but Apple does work closely with Developers who register with them, allowing them full access to pre-release software months in advance of the time most users ever see it. They keep them fully informed, sometimes years in advance, that certain functions are being deprecated and will no longer function at some time in the future. I admit that some developers are much better than others at putting this information to use and occasionally Apple will make a last minute change to something that causes developers to scramble after the fact. I don't think Apple breaks these apps on purpose, they are just trying to make room for new capability by dropping legacy interfaces. The only way that Apple can make money is by convincing you that their innovation is worth spending your hard earned cash.

    Aperture:

iPhoto is moving out. Aperture and iPhoto are now contained in a new photo app called Photo. The beta testers already have test versions. It can be available very soon.

"Lex" that may be so, however I still paid for Aperture....Does apple compensate for this in the way of a free upgrade

for the other new software replacing it? I do have a serial number.

    "Linc, MadMac's, Barney" --------------

I ran the AHT and it turned up with no issue's so I am going to go with a possible kernel issue....I know the issue is not overheating

due to the fact that my computer had been off all night and upon turning it on, there was not enough time for it to get hot before

    it immediately shut down.

Can anyone help with keychain issue's? I get constant keychain login pop ups upon start up for access to things like chrome, safari, messenger (which I don't even use) I have done repair's on keychain and will continue to.

Thank you again for everyone's help on this. I wont be taking my computer in now that I know its not hardware related.

You can still use Aperture; I do not know whether Photos is free or paid. very probably there is compensation for an existing Aperture license when it is a paid app.

I would be shocked if anything like that happened. Apple hasn't said if Photos would be free or paid, but I would be shocked if it were paid. Just today I think Apple updated its Aperture page to remind people that it is going away. Of course we aren't supposed to speculate on what Apple will do in the future.
