Q: nvram not resetting on iMac Yosemite

I am having keyboard discovery issues on a USB wired keyboard so I reset the SMC and wanted to clean the nvram (boot image). I follow the instructions to hold the 5 buttons on startup and it just goes to utility image without the second tone.

The iMac is intel based and only a little more than a year old. Other things on the same USB board on the unit itself seem to be functional. On Boot.
