Q: My MacBook Pro died on me and now it won't turn on!

I was watching a tv show on my laptop and i didnt remember to plug in my laptop because it was at 2% and when I got to my charger my laptop died on me. This has happened before, but in this event when I plugged in my laptop the charger light is green and when I press the power button it won't turn on. I proceeded to hold the power for 10 seconds so it would start it but my computer wouldn't turn back on. The white light on the side that usually goes from white to nothing isn't turning on either. The only light i see if from my battert, I've been charging my laptop for over 30 minutes... what should I do? Should I charge it over night or leave it for a couple day?? I don't know what do and I don't want to go to the Apple Store and pay to get it fixed! Thanks for reading and answering in advanced.

How old is your battery? And how many charge cycles does it have?

I would try to charge it without turning it on until tomorrow morning. If it still does not turn on, you can book an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar free of charge for troubleshooting/diagnosis. If there is a hardware problem, then you would have to pay.

thank you so much for responding! i have some questions
    1) How can you check how old your battery is?

    2) My cycle count is on 983 and the condition says Normal, is it bad that the cycle is that high? If so, what should I do about it? Thank you so much again!

So were you able to get your MBP to start up?

That cycle count is rather high.

Here's what Apple has to say:

Mac notebooks: Determining battery cycle count - Apple Support

It will help us diagnose your problem to know the exact model, size, year built, RAM installed and OS you're running.

Have you changed your battery (ever)? If not, the battery's age is the same as your Macbook.

And, depending on your battery model, 1,000 cycles is considered maximum although some may last longer. Older battery models only lasted for about 300 cycles.

    Try a SMC reset:

If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.

    Ciao.

Eventually, my MBP did eventually start up!
    1. So where can i find a new battery?

    2. If I don't change the battery when it reaches over the limit, like (1026 cycles/1000 cycles) will my computer battery just last shorter or will just die if I don't replace it?

    Thank you for replying!

I've never changed my battery before! Is it common to switch it up every now and then?

What does the system report say about the state of your battery?

File menu > About this Mac > More Info > System Report > scroll down to Power and post a screenshot of the battery report.

At best, it will simply stop working. At worst, a failed battery will start to swell and may dislocate some of your keys and/or trackpad (causing other damage). I can also leak/explode.  So you do want to carefully keep track of how it is doing.

" So where can i find a new battery?"

If you buy it from the Apple Store they will install it for you. Other sources can be dicey but a lot cheaper.

" will my computer battery just last shorter or will just die if I don't replace it?"

Depends on the state of the battery. Ordinarily it will just get weaker. However if it turns bad it can affect the computer, like not being able to start.

Okay, here's the state of my battery. Do you know when I should go to the Apple Store and get it checked out? (so that it won't break my MBP)

Well, so far it shows as 'normal'; once the battery needs attention, it should show "service battery" or something like that. You can either keep an eye on it, or make an appointment at a Genius Bar and have it checked. You will need a new battery at some point. Depending on your model, the older ones allowed the user to pop in a new battery - but, that is not possible on the newer models. The Apple store will install it for free as far as I know (if you buy it there).
