Q: Thunderbolt Display will not wake up after sleep!!!!!!

It seems like a lot of us are having an issue with the THUNDERBOLT DISPLAY opening after it goes to sleep.  I have the display connected to a new mac mini server and I can not get it to wake up after it goes to sleep unless I unplug the power or the thunderbolt cable and then plug it back in.

Since there is no power button on TBD, unplugging and plugging the display cable from imac did the trick.

I took my TBD to an authorized dealer and they are replacing the cord. They think it is the thunderbolt part of the cord that is having issues. I'll be sure to follow up if this doesn't fix it.

I'm strongly considering purchasing this display to use with a mid-2012 Mac Mini. I don't really care about daisy-chaining TB devices at all. I might use a USB port occasionally but that's it.

Should I be considering a different display?

    Thanks.

If you are not going to use the thunderbolt aspects of the display, it is a waste of money. Go buy a 1080p display for a couple hundred bucks. Even if you were looking to do thunderbolt hub work requirements, I'd still suggest going with a cheaper display until the current model is updated and improved after they iron out all the bugs. I'd return my two displays in a New York Minute if Apple would let me. So far I've spent a year "trouble shooting changes" with various tech support personel with zero results. Some of the problem posts for TB issues with these displays goes back to 2011. Go figure what Apple's priorities are?

    Thanks, Dennis.

    Just to clarify...

I would be using the display primarily for photo editing and would only use the TB to connect it to the mac mini.

I have to admit, after doing a lot of reading, there's a Dell monitor for $300 less that is looking more and more appealing.

I would be very careful about anything by Dell these days. From my reading over the last 3 or 4 years, Dell's quality and reliability have been reported as being lousy. I would do more homework and reading before going the Dell route. Samsung has always been a premium display maker. I'm sure there are others too. Maybe even HP. Check to see what Costco has and read their customer reviews. At some point Apple is going to need to update their displays to at least having TB 2. But more and more folks are going to 4K, so I wouldn't spend big bucks until I knew what I was going to be using for the next year vs. 3 or 4 years.

Do not buy. As you can see from this discussion, in this case, Apple's technology is seriously flawed. Therefore it should be rejected.

The display is beautiful, and a real work of art, with beautiful resolution - it just does not work correctly. Unless you want to waste endless hours trying to fix a problem that can not be clearly identified, do not purchase the monitor, because it has inferior engineeiing.

I have not had any issues ever since I turned off the option to "put hard disk to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver control panel. Using Macbook Pro Reina.

Besides being a beautiful display, the main advantage is using the displays as a dock for a laptop computer. One cable and everything external is connected. Other wise you can get much less expensive HDMI displays. The main disadvantage for me is that Bootcamp does not support dual thunderbolt displays. Also there is a noticeable refresh delay with animation, such as Prezi presentations.

Thank you, everyone for such quick responses!

I have started looking at Samsung displays and will check out Sony today.

So far I like this one http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/office/monitors/led/LS27B970DS/ZC

I'm just looking for a new monitor that I can trust the color. I had a Dell 24" a few years ago. Great monitor but I just didn't trust the color, even after calibration. I replaced it with the 23" Apple Cinema Display. Also beautiful but it is also quirky, after a power outage you have to play tic tac toe with power plugs to get it to come to life again, and it doesn't support HDCP. The Apple monitors are just so reliable with color reproduction!

If I could be sure that simply buying a new cable or adjusting the sleep settings would be enough, then I would order the TBD instantly, but even those fixes don't seem to work for everyone. Argh!!

Thank you all for your comments!

I Have two of the monitors and have found that leaving the machine on twenty four hours per day will keep the monitors lit up, and the computer will black them out without going to sleep. However, if I restart the machine, the monitors will not come back on until they are unplugged and allowed to sit in the corner a few days,. Nevertheless, when the monitors are working, still they will not pass the thunderbolt linkages further along to a hard drive which now is useless.

SO I would look for alternative displays and possibly a different technology from thunderbolt if possible.

I Was planning on upgrading to the new retina display, but do not trust the technology enough to risk the expenditures.

IT is not the cables. People think it is, but what really is happening is that the monitors are resetting themselves while they are sitting on the shelf at the repair shop, at least that is my guess.

SONY might have the accurate color you need but I do not have adequate knowledge to suggest an alternative to the Apple mess.
