Q: iPhone configuration utilityy has stopped working on a windows 64 bit PC with iTunes 12.1.0.71 failed to locate Apple Mobile Device Support.

Have apple pulled the iPhone Configuration Utility for Windows? After upgrading to iTunes 12.1.0.71 I get an error saying it failed to locate Apple Mobile Device Support but can find no resources to help troubleshoot this error.

    Hi GTipp,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

From what I understand, it sounds like your Apple Mobile Device Service has stopped working. To begin the troubleshooting, I would first recommend trying to restart the service by following the instructions in the attached article. Please let me know if the issue continues.

How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows - Apple Support

    Best regards,

    Joe

I have exactly the same problem as GTipp. Thank you for your reply Joe. However, I tried restarting the service but with no luck. I have also tried re-installing the configuration utility, also with no luck.

It seems like iTunes 12.1.0.71 is the problem - it worked fine before I upgraded - also it works fine on my other computer, which has a slightly older version of iTunes.

    Best regards

It is a big problem at the moment. iTunes 12.1 has broken the iPhone Config Utility. You cannot admin your iPhones in Business anymore.

Apple need to update the Config Utility - soon!

    As a work around:

uninstall "Apple Mobile Device Support" which is 64 bit with iTunes 12.1. Download iTunes 12.0.1 and extract the Setup.exe with 7-zip. Install "Apple Mobile Device Support.msi" from there, which  is still 32 bit.

Now you can use the iPhone config Utility again - but not iTunes 12.1 anymore. Your need to toggle with that two intalls until Apple has updated the Config Utility to 64bit.

    Cheers for the reply.

I did just that. Downgraded to the earlier iTunes. Frustrating...

Not at work today so will look at this tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies. Anyone know where I can snag a copy of 12.0.1?

    At your own risk:

    64bit: https://secure-appldnld.apple.com/iTunes12/031-08059.20141016.FrPFF/iTunes64Setu p.exe

    32bit: https://secure-appldnld.apple.com/iTunes12/031-08058.20141016.34epp/iTunesSetup. exe

you can unzip the itunes64Setup.exe with 7-zip or WINRAR and you only need to install "AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi" [11.480kB]. Note that it is called "...64.msi", but it is 32bit. When you unzip iTunes64Setup.exe from itunes 12.1 download you can see that it is named AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi [13.740kB]. So "double 64" means real 64bit! Wonderfull!

Thanks Banyoo. Up and running again. Hoping Apple do update the utility as they appear to have removed the windows version form their available downloads.

As far as it seems Apple will *not* continue to offer the iPhone Configuration Utiliy.

You need to join the Apple DEP program at

    http://www.apple.com/business/dep/

I just try to do that, but I need a DUNS and DEP number I do not have yet. For the moment I highly recommend to keep one computer on iTunes 12.0.1 to use iPhone Configuration Utiliy 3.6.2.

Apple hits all small bussiness customers with that policy. Thinking about leaving to Android...

this did not work for me

Installing just Applemobiledevicesupport meant iTunes config utility wouldn't open at all, no error message, just nothing.

So I installed iTunes as well, now I get an error that apple mobile device service wont start. So to get that service to start, i had to install AppleApplicationSupport. But having done that, iTunes config utility again does nothing when I click on it.

Is there anything else I can try - this is driving me crazy.

uninstall newest iTunes completely (check this!), reboot, install iTunes 12.0.1 from the links above.

Note that Apple will not continue to serve us with a new iPhoneConfigurationUtility - as far as I know.

    Thank you Banyoo,

This solved the problem - iPhone / iPad configuration utility works again with iTunes 12.0.1 and nothing lost by downgrading iTunes.
