Q: Macbook Pro 6/2 Mid 2010 Kernel Panic Video Systems Test Fail out of warranty repair got the expected bad news, have been following the boards. I cannot afford the $800 repair quoted, any advice? Who to call what to say?  Been a loyal Mac guy since 94

Just got the expected bad news, my macbook pro 6/2 failed the video systems test. I have been following the trail of tears of other 6/2 owners and now I am one of them. I am screwed. I need my mbp for making a living. I cannot afford the $800 repair. Is there anyone who would listen to my plight? I have been a loyal Apple Mac guy since 1994. Is there somewhere/someone in the heart of Apple that could help me?

Take it to an Apple Retail Store and inquire about a "Depot Repair." Instead of working on the computer in the store, they send it to a central refurbishment facility where everything they find wrong is replaced for a flat fee. The only exception is cosmetic damage. If you need a new dispay or case, the charge jumps up quite a bit.

Last time I saw someone post that they had exercised that option, the fee was roughly US$315. Some people report their MBPs coming back with new batteries as well, and on person reported the depot found their optical drive was on the verge of failure and replaced it as well for the same flat fee.

    Two downsides:

    1) The turn-around time is roughtly one working week.

    2) This option does not appear available outside the US and, maybe, Canada.

If you are somewhere else that has strong Apple support and Apple retail stores, it's worth asking.
