Q: After sleeping my macbook pro 15.4" mid 2012 model for overnight and pass 24 hours time, on wake -- the dock background is white for a few seconds and then it turns back to normal color. . .

After sleeping MacBook Pro 15.4" mid 2012 model (running Mac OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite) for overnight and pass 24 hours time, upon wake from sleep-- the dock background is white for a few seconds and then it turns back to the normal color.

Is this normal? Should I be worried? Is my GPU defective?

This is not normal. This happens once in a while.  This doesn't indicate that the GPU is  defective.

Does this happen overtime when computer wakes  up from sleep?

    You can try resetting PRAM.

Yes I zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC but it still happens.

It doesn't happen everytime but sometimes.

If you see a progress bar, I think it IS normal. I see it on my MBP from time to time, usually after the computer has been sleeping for a day or longer.

By default the MBP is programmed to go into safe sleep mode where any data in RAM is written to the hard drive to protect it in case the battery runs out of charge while the computer is asleep. If the system needs to do this, a wake-up takes longer and the computer displays a "washed out" screen you describe while the data is retrieved from the hard drive.

Mac computers: Progress bar appears after waking from sleep - Apple Support

The reason that you see it intermittently is that the call to exercise this option is based on amount of data in RAM when you sleep the computer, how much RAM is installed, how long the computer has been asleep, and the battery charge level.

It is an important security function that protects your data. You can find hacks elsewhere that tell you how to alter this behavior but I most strongly suggest that you not mess with those settings. Your data is at risk if you make changes.

    Allan Jones,

I am not talking about a progress bar,

I am talking about my dock-- the color of the dock is translucent.  But after sleeping it over night and waking my macbook pro from sleep, for 2-3 seconds the color of the dock is pure white non translucent and then it returns back to normal. The Icons in the Dock are unaffected.

Got it. So the rest of the desktop remains its normal color? Does the same thing happen whether the computer is on battery or wall power?

The desktop is the same, but for the dock, the dock's icons are ok but the color of the dock turns white for 2-3 seconds and then it turns back translucent.  It is turns to whitish gray like what the dock looks like when the reduce transparency is checked in  accessibility. then after 2 seconds it turns back to translucent color on the dock.

but it happens only a few times after i sleep the macbook pro overnight.
